Serge Patrick Poitras (born May 27, 1949 in Jonquière , Québec , Canada ) is a Canadian clergyman and Roman Catholic Bishop of Timmins .

Life

Serge Poitras studied philosophy and Catholic theology at the seminary in Chicoutimi , Quebec, and received on 27 May in 1973 by the Bishop of Chicoutimi , Marius Paré , the ordination . At the University of Laval in Quebec City , he completed a master's degree in theology and at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome a doctorate to Dr. theol. He was vicar at Chicoutimi Cathedral and taught at Chicoutimi Minor Seminary . After heading the Center for Diocesan Pastoral Care, he was professor at the seminary of the Archdiocese of Montréal from 1990 to 2000 , and dean of studies from 1998 to 2000. In 2000 he was appointed secretary for the French-speaking part of the Apostolic Nunciature in Canada. In 2010, Serge Poitras was appointed deputy secretary of Cardinal Marc Ouellet , Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops .

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Bishop of Timmins on November 10, 2012. He was ordained bishop by the Apostolic Nuncio in Canada, Pedro López Quintana , on December 27, 2012; Co- consecrators were Terrence Thomas Prendergast SJ , Archbishop of Ottawa , and André Rivest , Bishop of Chicoutimi. In the Canadian Bishops' Conference Poitras is a member of the Episcopal Commission for Liturgy and Sacraments and the Commission for Priests.
