Serhij Viktorovyč Žadan ( Ukrainian Сергій Вікторович Жадан , scientific transliteration Serhij Viktorovyč Žadan, alternative transcription Serhij Zhadan; born August 23, 1974 in Starobilsk , Luhansk Oblast ) is a Ukrainian writer , poet and translator .

Life

Serhiy Schadan was born in the Luhansk industrial area in the east of what was then the Soviet Republic of Ukraine . He later moved with his parents to Kharkiv , the second largest city in Ukraine. There Schadan studied literature , Ukrainian and German and did his doctorate on Ukrainian futurism .

Since 1991 the author of numerous volumes of poetry has been one of the defining figures of the young scene in Kharkiv, where he still lives today. Schadan also organizes literature and music festivals and writes rock song texts, which he speaks to the music of the band Sobaky w kosmossi (German: dogs in the cosmos ).

In his first novel Depeche Mode , which was also published in German in 2007 , Schadan describes the odyssey of his three protagonists through post-socialist Ukraine in the period of upheaval in the early 1990s. The anarchic students of the time saw the British electro-pop band Depeche Mode as a vanishing point of their dreams of getting out of a mess. The audio book version of Depeche Mode , published in 2008, was read by Harry Rowohlt .

In the six-part essay volume Big Mäc. Stories Schadan went from working up the contemporary history of his country over to snapshots of places of emigrants subculture of Central Europe. Serhij Schadan was awarded the Hubert Burda Prize for Young Poetry in 2006. Schadan was an activist in the Orange Revolution .

Serhij Schadan was in Frankfurt am Main at the beginning of February 2014 together with the Ukrainian authors Jurij Andruchowytsch and Jurko Prochasko and the Ukrainian author Tanja Maljartschuk as part of the “Book and Media Practice” training program at Goethe University . On February 5th he read an excerpt from “The Invention of Jazz in Donbass” during a reading evening in the Literaturhaus Frankfurt and on February 6th took part in a discussion about the political situation in Ukraine. At the Leipzig Book Fair , Serhiy protested against accusations from German leftists that the Ukrainian democracy movement had been massively infiltrated, and said: "Fascists are those who support Putin's aggressive and chauvinist policies ".

In a full-page article on page 35 of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung on April 20, 2014, Schadan described his own experiences in storming the Kharkiv region on March 1, 2014. On this occasion, he was beaten to hospital by pro-Russian forces, the occupiers. In August 2014, the Neue Zürcher Zeitung published a detailed report by Schadan on the fear of people in Ukraine .

In 2014, Schadan and his German translators were awarded the Brücke Berlin Prize for Literature and Translators for his novel The Invention of Jazz in Donbass (original title Voroshilovgrad , that is the former name of Luhansk) . Also in 2014, the novel was voted the best Ukrainian book of the decade by the BBC's Ukrainian service (out of the 10 “best books of the year” 2005-2014).

On October 17, 2015, Schadan was honored with the Central European Angelus Literature Prize for Mesopotamia . Michał Petryk and Adam Pomorski translated Mesopotamia at the same time as it went to print, so that it could appear in Wołowiec at the end of 2014.

Between April 2014 and August 2015, Schadan and his band traveled to Donbass several times, giving concerts and delivering relief supplies. His diary entries tell of “paradoxes and crumbling templates”, of wickedness, wrong logic and daily madness.

In December 2016 he was one of the signatories of the appeal of the Berlin International Literature Festival to put an end to the mass murder in Aleppo! who opposes the "bombing war by Russian President Putin in the Syrian city ​​of Aleppo ".

The translation of Schadan's novel Internat from Ukrainian into German by Sabine Stöhr and Juri Durkot was awarded the Leipzig Book Fair Prize in the “Translations” category in March 2018 . Dirk Kurbjuweit called the novel "a small masterpiece".

In May 2018, Schadan was among the first to sign an open letter to the German Chancellor and the Federal Foreign Minister asking them to campaign for the release of the Ukrainian filmmaker Oleh Sentsov , who was imprisoned in Russia .
