The Semois , for the section in France also Semoy (also grammatically female ), Sesbach (German in Luxembourg), is a river in the southern Ardennes , which rises in Arlon in the Belgian province of Luxembourg and after 210 kilometers in the French Monthermé ( Département Ardennes ) flows into the Meuse with an average water flow of almost 30 m³ / s .

geography

The Semois rises in Arlon, half a kilometer southeast of the old town, next to Avenue de Longwy. The source is just below the watershed and just half a kilometer west of sources that belong to the catchment area of Eisch - Alzette - Sauer - Moselle - Rhine . The watershed to the Chiers is just over 1 km away and not much higher. Arlon is located on a high plateau that merges with the gentle basin of the upper Semois to the west with a slight gradient, but is limited to other river areas by almost steep slopes to the north, east and south. Only 42 km further west, at Chassepierre (near Florenville ), does the Semois valley gain depth. From there to the mouth ( geological history rather from the mouth upstream to there), the meanders of the Semois have dug deep into the rock and created a narrow valley with steep, sometimes steep slopes. Between Bohan (near Vresse-sur-Semois ) and Les Hautes Rivières , the river crosses the Belgian-French border and flows 210 km in length at Monthermé as a right tributary into the Meuse, whose valley extends from Charleville-Mézières (15 km south) to Namur (65 km north) is deeply cut.

history

At Cugnon (to Bertrix ) there is a Celtic oppidum from the late La Tène period , which was probably conquered by the Romans during the Gallic War . The Roman road from CIVITAS REMORUM ( Reims ) to AUGUSTA TREVERORUM ( Trier ) crossed the river nearby . The Roman river name SESMARA has been handed down from the 2nd century AD.

In a tight loop of the Semois lies Bouillon Castle , ancestral seat of Godfrey of Bouillon , which over the centuries has been expanded into a mighty fortress .

tourism

The valley is important for tourism. The river itself is popular with canoeists and anglers. A cycle path uses partly a disused railway line, partly the country road. Numerous viewpoints on the slopes of the valley can be reached on foot.
