action

The seven employees Steve, Maggie, Harris, Richard, Gordon, Jill and Billy of the arms company Palisade Defense go to a "team building weekend" in a hunting lodge in Hungary . However, their way there is blocked by a fallen tree and the bus driver refuses to take the alternative route. Then it is decided to walk to the hunting lodge while the bus driver drives back. The group makes their way to the hut with their luggage. When Steve goes into the woods to urinate, he apparently sees a man in a mask in the woods. The others don't believe him and move on. His urine exposes a piece of a corpse's face, which goes unnoticed. Apparently having arrived at your destination, you will find a shack instead of the expected luxury hostel. When searching for the power generator, documents are found in Russian, which include the Palisade Defense company logo .

In the evening, Jill sees a masked man in front of her window, whereupon the group plans to return to town. The next morning Jill and Harris are supposed to go to the hill to get cell phone reception and help. Meanwhile the rest of the group is playing “ paintball ”. Jill and Harris find the Palisade Defense bus and the mangled bus driver on their way and then want to pick up the others. Meanwhile, Gordon steps into a bear trap , which amputated his leg through unsuccessful attempts by the others. Everyone gets on the bus and wants to take it to safety, but this is prevented by a chain of nails thrown across the path , so that the bus crashes. Jill runs into the forest under the influence of a shock, Harris is cut off the head with a machete by a masked man . When Harris' head sees the rest of the body, he smiles triumphantly, as this was previously a contentious topic of conversation in the group and he now sees his view that the head will survive a few minutes more confirmed. The remaining group decides to return to the hut and walk into town the next day. Jill is caught, gagged and tied to a tree by the stranger. After telling her something in the local language and showering her with gasoline, he burns her alive with a flame thrower .

They barricade themselves in the hut and wait for the next day. However, Gordon, half drugged, is kidnapped into the vaulted cellar - the remaining colleagues follow him, uncover the secret of the hut and confirm the conspiracy theories that have been put forward: They are dealing with a group of completely brutalized former soldiers. Any help comes too late for Gordon: someone has engraved the Palisades company logo on his stomach by cutting out entire pieces of skin. Billy is hit by a load of shot and dies shortly afterwards in Maggie's arms. Richard flees into the forest and steps on a land mine owned by his own company. The killer is looking for Steve, who is hiding in a closet, and is followed by Maggie. Together they manage to catch the killer, and Maggie can shoot him with his own rifle.

A group of other ex-soldiers are waiting in front of the hut, both of them flee into the forest. They meet Richard who is still standing on his mine. He helps them get across the minefield and later sacrifices himself to kill two of the ex-soldiers with him. Steve and Maggie now meet the right hunting lodge and find the waiting George (their boss of Palisade Defense) with two call girls from an escort agency . George fired the prototype rocket launcher he had brought with him at the ex-soldiers, but instead of the villains, the rocket destroyed a passenger plane that happened to be flying over the area. So the escape continues, the newly formed group runs away from the ex-soldiers, the connection to the opening scene is established (George steps into a trap and is then killed with a knife). Maggie is caught in a sling and dangling upside down from a tree. You and Steve fight with the ex-soldiers, the call girls fall into a deep hole in the ground. Maggie and Steve manage to escape. Steve meets the call girls, whom he immediately saves from their hole. Maggie, meanwhile, follows an old track in the woods that leads to a derelict prison camp. There she tries to call for help using an old but still working telephone, but then she runs into the ex-soldier with the flamethrower and has to flee again. She breaks her leg in the process; the confident ex-soldier wants to kill her with a hand ax, but is shot by one of the call girls with a machine gun. Maggie, Steve and the call girls save themselves in a boat and row to safety with it.

Alternative ending on the bonus DVD of the Special Edition: After the survivors have escaped into the boat, they are drifting directly towards a large waterfall a little later. However, it remains to be seen whether they will also plunge it down.

Reviews

“While director Christopher Smith had already made a remarkably staged, dramaturgically rather simple horror debut with“ Creep ”, his contribution to the very popular survival splatter cinema has achieved something extraordinary. While brutal torture and killing sequences evoke feelings of panic, the formidable ensemble with British humor and stereotypical office stallion habit creates a hilarious atmosphere - as if “ Stromberg ” were on vacation in a “ hostel ”. [...] Conclusion: The brilliant mix of British humor and ugly survival horror seems like a single piece despite the genre balancing act. "

“Severance is also rounded off by the fact that director Smith saves his viewers lengthy explanations or resolutions and concentrates on the essentials: the amount of the blood toll that the employees of the weapons company have to pay for their entry into the lodge. This gives the film a lot of speed, which is maintained by the many skirmishes on the fringes of the story. There is always something going on on the screen. However, not quite as much blood is shed as in Hostel, The Descent or similar genre films, the horror often stands behind the bizarre black attack on the laughing muscles in the best Final Destination - or Shaun Of The Dead tradition. Conclusion: If you like to laugh, even though it actually hurts really badly, "Severance" is the right choice. "

“A failed attempt at a horror comedy that slavishly clings to the genre's specifications. The random sequence of splatter effects has a certain entertainingness, but that doesn't help either the genre or the film. "

" Severance is not a stupid parody, but skilfully combines comedy with horror, couples gallows humor with explicit splatter scenes and moments of horror. [...] Anyone who has already liked Shaun of the Dead will like Severance at least as much. "
