Shane Kevin Ferguson (born July 12, 1991 in Derry ) is a Northern Irish football player who has been under contract with the English first division club Newcastle United since 2009 . He is currently on loan to Millwall FC .

Player career

Newcastle United (2009-)

Shane Ferguson, who moved from his Northern Irish homeland to the youth academy of the English first division club Newcastle United in 2007, made his debut on August 25, 2010 in the English League Cup 2010/11 in a 3-2 away win over Accrington Stanley. He played his first league game on January 5, 2011 in the 2010/11 Premier League in a 5-0 home win over West Ham United . In the 2012/13 season he was loaned to the second division Birmingham City after nine games , where he came to eleven inserts. Also in the following season , in which "The Blues" could only avoid relegation through the better goal difference, he played in Birmingham. In February 2015, he was awarded to the record champions Glasgow Rangers in Scotland , who only played in the second division due to financial problems after forced relegation . There he was not used and returned to Newcastle in June. In August he was then awarded to the third division Millwall FC . In January 2016 it was completely taken over by Millwall. "The Lions" were relegated from the second division in the preseason and now first missed the direct promotion as fourth and then lost the promotion playoff final at Wembley Stadium in front of 51,277 spectators against the table sixth Barnsley FC .

Northern Ireland National Team (2009–)

In November 2008, at the age of 17, he made his Northern Irish U-21 debut against Scotland . In October 2009 he took part with the U-19 team in the first qualifying round for the U-19 European Football Championship 2010 , which the Northern Irish survived together with Bosnia-Herzegovina . In the second qualifying round in May 2010, they finished fourth at the mini-tournament in Moscow behind Italy , the hosts and the Czech Republic . As early as November 2009, he was already in the U-21 for a qualification for the U-21 European Championship 2011 against the Czech Republic . Six more missions for the U-21s followed in 2010, 2011 and 2012 in the qualifications for the U-21 European Championships in 2011 and 2013 . He met the eventual world champion Mario Götze in the game against Germany on September 7, 2010 . The Germans and Northern Irish failed to qualify for the 2011 finals, and the Northern Irish two years later.

Debuted yet as youth international Shane Ferguson a month before his 18th birthday on June 6, 2009 in the senior national team in friendly match against Italy 3 for less than a year earlier: as he, after 78 minutes, when the score was 0 Corry Evans came off the bench , who also played his first international match. He then had to wait more than two years for his next assignment and initially continued to play for the U-19 and U-21 teams. In November 2011 he made it clear that he would not play for the Irish national team like James McClean, also from Derry . On February 29, 2012 he played his second international game under the new national coach Michael O'Neill (0-3 against Norway ). In the following 20 games he came to 16 missions. In his fourth international match on August 15, 2012, he scored his only international goal to date: in the 3: 3 against Finland he scored the first goal of the game in the seventh minute.

His first competitive game for Northern Ireland was the second qualifying match for the 2014 World Cup against Luxembourg . From the fourth group game he was part of the regular formation. The Northern Irish could only win the home game against group winners Russia and missed the finals in Brazil as fifth .

In qualifying for the 2016 European Football Championship in France, he was initially part of the first team, but then he lost his regular place and only made short appearances as a substitute. He was only in the starting line-up for the first time in an EM preparatory game against Slovenia . He was eventually accepted into the Northern Ireland squad and was back on the starting line-up in the first game against Poland , but was replaced 15 minutes after the 0-1 for striker Conor Washington . In the remaining tournament games until the end of the round of 16, he was no longer used.
