She's the Man - totally my type! is an American comedy film from 2006.

action

The film is an idiosyncratic interpretation of Shakespeare's "What you want". Viola Hastings comes from a well-to-do family and - to the displeasure of her mother - plays football at Cornwall school . Since the girls' team is disbanded, she tries to get a place with the boys, but is rejected. Her friend Justin, the goalkeeper of the Cornwall team, speaks out against her as well.

When she learns that her twin brother Sebastian is going to London with his band for two weeks , she takes on his role. She disguises herself as a boy to play on the Illyria Preparatory team. She doesn't make it into the first team at first. But then “Sebastian” impresses the teammates by “he” flirts with several attractive women. In chemistry class, "Sebastian" meets Olivia, whom "his" roommate Duke Orsino also has an eye on. “Sebastian” arranges a date between the two of them and receives additional soccer training as a reward, with which “he” still makes it into the first team.

But Viola gradually falls in love with Duke, while Olivia takes a liking to "Sebastian". The situation becomes even more complicated when the real Sebastian returns from London and Olivia kisses him. There is jealousy and arguments. Inadvertently, Sebastian, who is not talented in football, runs into the prestigious game against Cornwall. Malcolm and Sebastian's ex-girlfriend Monique point out to the director of Illyria Preparatory that "Sebastian" is a girl, but Sebastian proves the opposite in the middle of the field. In the second half, Viola secretly takes over her brother's position. After an argument on the pitch, she comes out as a girl. But she is accepted by her teammates because of her good performance and leads her team to victory.

In the end, Sebastian and Olivia come together as well as Viola and Duke. Viola appears with Duke at the debutante ball.

background

According to the producers, the film is based on William Shakespeare's comedy What you want . There are several parallels between the play and the film. The names of the main characters (Viola, Sebastian, Olivia, Duke Orsino) are the same. Several other names from the Shakespeare comedy appear in the film: Malvolio as the name of Malcolm's tarantula (incorrectly translated as tarantula in the German language ), festivals as Malcolm's last name, Valentine as Monique's last name, and Andrew and Toby as Duke's friends and Maria as Olivias Girlfriend (at Shakespeare Olivia's maid). Shakespeare's comedy is set in Illyria (Illyria). There are also some parallels in the plot and allusions to the original title Twelfth Night .
