The screenwriter Sam Baum lives in Los Angeles with his girlfriend Sammy Kingston . Sam had several girlfriends before Sammy, but Sammy is for him the great love, while Sammy before her relationship with Sam with the handsome doctor Stunner Joe married was, however, has left him because he was not to become an actress to her dream believed.

When her ex-husband shows up at a surprise party on Sammy's birthday and is the last guest to help clean up, Sammy offers him to spend the night on the couch. The next morning, Joe suggests that he could stay with Sammy and Sam for a while and in return pay the rent, which Sam reluctantly agrees to.

When Sam is in a club with his friends , his friend Max puts him in touch with the popular actress Kim Powers, but Sam doesn't think the actress would be interested in his film. When Sam returns home and finds his girlfriend sad, he promises her the lead role in his upcoming film. When Kim Powers actually gets in touch with Sam the next day through Max, Sam can't believe it at first, but finally promises her the lead role in his upcoming film. While Sam is busy writing the script, the relationship between Sammy and her ex-husband keeps improving. Sammy continues to try acting roles, and she even works with Kim Powers on one. Her friend Carly has meanwhile got a role alongside Charlie Sheen .

When Sammy announced that it would for the time after New York go to there in a theater play along, Sam confesses that he has forgiven her role in his film already at Kim Powers. Sammy is furious that Sam did not tell her this beforehand, especially since she had already worked with Kim Powers on a film, leaves him the next day and no longer responds to his calls.

Sam tries to get over Sammy and runs into Gwen, who, however, cannot start an intimate relationship because he is not over Sammy yet.

When Sam attends the premiere of Sammy's play while visiting relatives in New York, she also meets her friend Carly, who is also attending the performance with Charlie Sheen. After the performance, Sam wants to propose to his former girlfriend. After being mocked by Charlie for his looks, he enters the locker room where he sees Sam and Joe. He flies back home frustrated.

At home, Sam completes his script and introduces it to Kim Powers, who thinks it's great. He meets with Gwen again and becomes intimate with her. However, when he learns how many men Gwen has already slept with, he is horrified and does not want to know anything more about her. Angry, he also throws Joe out of his apartment. As things settle down, Kim Powers' agent calls, angry that she has been passed over, forbids Sam from contacting Kim Powers and threatens that she will see that his career, like David Hasselhoff's, ends. Sam gets drunk and starts a fight with Joe, who tells him what happened when Sam left the locker room in the theater. So Joe tried to get Sammy back, but Sammy refused. When Sammy left the cabin, Charlie told her what a great guy Sam was. When Sammy contacted Sam, he had already left. Sam and Joe make up and Joe moves out the next day.

Finally, Sammy returns to Sam. She explains that she quit her role and that the two will become a couple again.
