Shine - Der Weg ins Licht (sometimes also Shine - Der Weg zum Licht ) is a film from 1996 about the pianist David Helfgott , who suffers from a schizoaffective disorder and spends several years in mental hospitals . Armin Mueller-Stahl , Noah Taylor , John Gielgud , Googie Withers , Justin Braine , Sonia Todd , Chris Haywood and Alex Rafalowicz play alongside Geoffrey Rush as Helfgott . The script was written by Jan Sardi and director Scott Hicks .

Based on the true story of the highly talented Australian pianist David Helfgott , the film recreates in a flashback the traumatic early years of the child prodigy who grew up as the son of Polish - Jewish parents and won numerous local musical competitions through to adulthood.
The adolescent David, who learned to play the piano during childhood, and his siblings are regularly confronted by the patriarchal father with his memories of childhood in Europe and the loss of his family in concentration camps . David finally breaks away from his father and leaves home to study abroad. After a nervous breakdown , he returns to Australia and remains in a mental health facility to cure symptoms of a schizoaffective disorder . Many years later, his love for the astrologer Gillian gave him the strength to return triumphantly to the stage despite the illness. As a bar pianist regaining his self-confidence, he finally appears again in concert halls.

Geoffrey Rush won the Oscar for best leading actor , the film was nominated for another 6 Oscars: Best Supporting Actor ( Armin Mueller-Stahl ), Best Director , Best Editing , Best Score , Best Film and Best Original Screenplay .
The German Film and Media Assessment FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the rating particularly valuable.
