Shūzō Matsuoka ( Japanese 松岡 修造 , Matsuoka Shūzō ; born November 6, 1967 in Tokyo Prefecture ) is a former Japanese tennis player .

Life

Matsuoka, whose father Isao Matsuoka had held senior positions in the Tōhō film studio since the mid-1970s , became a professional tennis player in 1986. In 1989 he was in the final of the ATP tournament in Wellington , where he was defeated by Kelly Evernden . In the same year he won his first and only double title in Auckland at the side of Steve Guy . In 1992 he won his only individual title on the ATP World Tour in Seoul . He was the first Japanese to do this. He was also in the final of the Queen's Club Championships , in which he was defeated by Wayne Ferreira . Between 1991 and 1995 he won three individual titles on the ATP Challenger Tour . Overall, he won a single and a double title on the ATP World Tour in the course of his career. He reached his highest ranking in the tennis world rankings in 1992 with position 46 in singles, and in 1989 with position 95 in doubles.

He achieved his best result in a Grand Slam tournament in 1995 when he advanced to the quarterfinals of Wimbledon , in which he was defeated by the eventual winner Pete Sampras in four sets. In the doubles competition, he was once in the second round at the Australian Open and the US Open .

Matsuoka played 31 singles and five doubles games for the Japanese Davis Cup team between 1987 and 1997 . At the 1988 Summer Olympics , 1992 Summer Olympics and 1996 Summer Olympics , he competed for Japan. In his first appearance in 1988 he played both singles and doubles, but retired on the side of Toshihisa Tsuchihashi in the first round. In his individual games he never got past the first round, in 1988 he was defeated by Emilio Sánchez Vicario , in 1992 to Renzo Furlan and in 1996 against Tim Henman . In 1989 he took part in the Hopman Cup with Masako Yanagi , they were defeated in the first round against the Czechoslovaks Helena Suková and Miloslav Mečíř , where Matsuoka was able to win his singles against Mečíř in two sets.

After retiring from professional sports in 1998, he made frequent appearances on Japanese television. He is married to Emiko Taguchi, a former TV announcer for TV Tokyo , and has three children.
