After completing a commercial apprenticeship with a focus on banking, he initially worked as a banker . In 1879 he founded the banking company " Hardy & Hinrichsen " after having been an authorized officer at Norddeutsche Bank .

In 1871 he was elected to the Hamburg parliament in general elections , of which he remained a member for over 30 years until his death. He joined the Left Center faction. Hinrichsen was first secretary on the board of the citizenship in 1872, before he was elected its first vice-president in 1880 and its president in 1892.

Of his numerous offices, the following should be mentioned: his membership in the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce , of which he was President in 1889/90 and who sent him to the deputation for indirect taxes and duties, his position on the board of directors at Norddeutsche Bank, his work in the administration of the Lübeck- Büchener Eisenbahn , the deputy chairman of the provisional exchange committee in Berlin , as well as membership in the board of the foundation school from 1815 .

The former State Councilor of the Hamburg tax authorities, Leo Lippmann , who was forced into early retirement as a Jew by the National Socialists , wrote in his memoirs of Hinrichsen:

"My father often spoke to us boys of him as a man who, as an unbaptized Jew, could not become a senator, but who has achieved an almost equally high position as president of the citizenry."
