Herbert Dau (born December 8, 1911 in Hamburg ; † July 7, 2000 there ) was a German social democratic politician , trade unionist . Chairman of the Board and President of the Hamburg Parliament . He is Helmut Dau's uncle .

Origin, school and education

Herbert Dau was the son of a harbor master on the Vettel. He was the youngest of nine brothers and attended the elementary school on the Veddel in Hamburg , the secondary school in Rothenburgsort and the upper secondary school in St. Georg . He finished school with a high school diploma. A trade was out of the question for him after a coal wagon had smashed its arm when he was six. He got into politics through his enthusiasm for the French Revolution . He then completed an apprenticeship as an insurance salesman at Volksfürsorge .

Weimar Republic and the time of National Socialism

Dau participated early on as a member of the Workers' Gymnastics and Sports Association .

In 1930 he became a member of the SPD . He quickly took over the post of district leader of the SPD district Harburger Chaussee (Dau lived at Harburger Chaussee 41, 3rd floor at the time) and he began to study economics.

After the Nazi regime came to power , Dau took part in the underground work of the Social Democrats. He participated in leaflet campaigns and collected donations. He was also active as a coordinator for the illegal party leadership of the Hamburg SPD, including Helmut Weidt in particular . On March 11, 1935, he was arrested at his place of work in the Volksfürsorge on charges of preparing for high treason and had to finish his studies. In prison he was able to coordinate his testimony with Helmut Weidt before the Gestapo . He was released again in August of the same year through a "confession" in which it was "only" about a small distribution of the underground newspaper of the SPD Rote Blätter . If his work as a liaison had become known, it would not have turned out so lightly.

His employer at the time, Volksfürsorge , dismissed him without notice immediately after his arrest, and so, after his release in August 1935, he did not find another job as a correspondent for Hamburg-Mannheimer Versicherung until January 1936 .

From 1946 to 1978 he was for the SPD in the Hamburg Parliament, in which he served as the Mayor's President from 1960 to 1978 .

After leaving the citizenry, Dau worked as an honorary judge at the Hamburg Constitutional Court for 20 years .
