action
Sierra Burgess is a smart, but unpopular girl who wants to study at Stanford University . Popular but devious Veronica often tries to bring down Sierra's life, showering her with mean sayings and comments about how she looks. When Jamey, a cute football player, asks Veronica for her number, she gives him Sierra's number instead. Veronica gave Jamey the wrong number because she has a boyfriend, Spence, who is in college.
This lie leads Jamey to text Sierra believing that she is Veronica. After Sierra and Jamey texting and flirting with each other for a while, Sierra begins to like Jamey. She realizes that he thinks he's writing to someone else. Sierra tells her best friend Dan that she met a guy. Dan warns her to keep in touch with Jamey as she will only become unhappy.
When Sierra learns that Jamey believes he is texting Veronica, Sierra approaches Veronica. Since Veronica is heartbroken about the recent breakup with Spence, Sierra offers to tutor Veronica to make her appear smarter. During the tutoring, Sierra learns more about Veronica's frustrating family life and begins to make friends with her. One night Jamey calls Sierra on video. Veronica appears in front of the screen while Sierra conducts the conversation in the background. Since the two are not synchronized, Jamey ends the call. The two laugh at the situation together and become friends.
When Jamey asks Sierra, whom he thinks is Veronica, on a date, Veronica goes with him as a favor for Sierra. However, when he tries to kiss Veronica, Veronica tells him to close his eyes and Sierra kisses him instead, and Jamey thinks he kissed Veronica.
Jamey kisses Veronica before a football game. Veronica is mad at Jamey for feeling like she betrayed Sierra. Jamey doesn't understand why she's angry because he thinks she was the person he kissed on their date. Sierra sees the kiss and believes Veronica kissed him on purpose. In revenge, she decides to expose the fact that Veronica was dumped by her ex-boyfriend via SMS. During the football game, Veronica angrily tells Jamey the truth, and when a panicked Sierra tries to defend and explain himself, he recognizes her voice. Jamey is shocked by what has happened and wants Sierra and Veronica to stay away from him. Dan is also disappointed in his best friend and says that he doesn't recognize her again.
Sierra writes a song called Sunflower and sends it to Veronica as an apology. Veronica sends the song to Jamey and tells him what a great girl Sierra really is. He forgives Sierra, kisses her and invites her to the homecoming ball. At the ball, Sierra reconciles with Veronica and Dan.
