Simon Annand

Simon Annand (born April 17, 1955 in Crowthorne , Berkshire ) is a British photographer . His art is primarily dedicated to the photography of actors in the theater just before they go on stage.

Career

Simon Annand grew up with three siblings and one adoptive sister in Crowthorne, a small village in southeast Berkshire . Annand attended Bradfield College in Berkshire, England from 1968 to 1973 .

Annand he studied at the Technical University Bristol Polytechnic in Bristol , which since 1992 University of the West of England is, politics and philosophy . Annand first taught himself to develop films and then from 1989 studied photography at the University of Westminster , which at that time was still called the Polytechnic of Central London. He completed a Masters in Film from the London College of Printing .

In 1980 Annand worked as a bartender at the theater bar at the Lyric Hammersmith , where he took his first pictures with a friend's camera. In 1982 he met the Russian director Yuri Lyubimov in the theater , who was staging Dostoyevsky's “ Schuld und Atonement ” there. This allowed him to make recordings of the rehearsals. Annand presented the result of his work in 1982 in the Lyric Hammersmith Theater in his first own exhibition "Crime and Punishment". From 1987 to 1989 Annand worked as a theater photographer at the Old Vic Theater under the British theater director Jonathan Miller .

Annand later worked for the BBC , the National Theater , the Royal Shakespeare Company , Sonia Friedman Productions , the Glyndebourne Opera , the Moscow Arts Theater , the Odeon Theater Paris and other theaters, mainly in England .

Works

During the years in London's West End, Annand photographed actors 35 minutes before their performance. This period is usually announced with the loudspeaker announcement “The Half”. Annand photographed stars like Jeremy Irons during this period as they morphed into their fictional characters. Annand has kept his concept since the 1980s and has portrayed celebrities such as Daniel Day-Lewis , Judi Dench , Daniel Craig , Tilda Swinton , Cate Blanchett , Gillian Anderson , Rowan Atkinson, and John Goodman . “My style is not a style,” he says. For him, what counts is what the portrayed are radiating at that moment. Annand told the British Independent : "The dressing room is the physical space where the psychological negotiation between the actor and this fictional character can take place."

Annand von Salz und Silber, gallery and publisher for documentary photography, has been represented since May 2018.

Illustrated books

The 320-page photo book "The Half" by the English publishing house Faber & Faber shows actors such as Cate Blanchett , Martin Sheen , Daniel Craig , Daniel Day-Lewis , Tilda Swinton , Helen Mirren , Daniel Radcliffe and Glenn Close . Judi Dench wrote the preface to the illustrated book. There she writes: “Simon Annand is one of the most amazing photographers I have had the pleasure of working with. He is an individualist with an eye for the unusual. The results speak for themselves. ”The band was discontinued in 2014 and the rights were returned to the photographer.

The Chinese book publisher Duku published a Chinese edition of the illustrated book in 2017 with a circulation of 3,000 copies.
