Skeletons is the tenth studio album by the hard rock band Danzig around singer Glenn Danzig . The pure cover album was released on November 27, 2015 via Glenn Danzig's Evilive label and AFM Records .

background

Glenn Danzig had been planning to record a cover album for a long time. He had his first songs, like Devil's Angels , in the back of his mind since 1979, and it was also certain that the album would pay tribute to Elvis Presley . Guitarist Tommy Victor and drummer Johnny Kelly were involved in the recording. Glenn Danzig, however, played the drums himself on five of the ten songs. He has also appeared as a pianist, bassist, guitarist and music producer . Chris Rakestraw was the sound engineer and Gene Grimaldi was responsible for the mastering .

Cover and title

The cover of the album shows Glenn Danzig together with the porn actress Kayden Kross . Both wear the typical Misfits make-up. For Danzig it was the first time in 35 years that he wore this makeup. The position of Danzig and Kross on the cover, on the other hand, is a tribute to the David Bowie cover album Pin Ups (1973). The motif was photographed by photographer Paul Brown. The title of the album is ambiguous. On the one hand it describes the basis (quasi the bone structure) of Danzig's music, such as Black Sabbath or Elvis Presley , on the other hand it refers to the American phrase "Skeletons in the closet" (German: " Leichen im Keller "), that is on the fact that certain songs would not be expected from him.

Song info

Two songs were taken from obscure 1960s biker films . Devil's Angel from the movie Rebels in Leather Jackets (1967, OT: Devil's Angels ) comes from Davie Allen & The Arrows . According to his own statement, Danzig completed the arrangement of the song back in 1979, when he was still the singer of The Misfits . Even then he had plans to record a solo album with cover versions .

Satan, in turn, comes from the film Die Sadisten des Satans (OT: Satan's Sadists ).

Crying in the Rain by Carole King and Howard Greenfield , originally written for The Everly Brothers , closes the album. Danzig used a sparsely instrumented piano arrangement to end the album.

Not for the album could Danzig use a cover version of Some Velvet Morning by Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra , which he had recorded with Cherie Curie from The Runaways . The author did not release the rights. In the end, he didn't like a variation of an Ennio Morricone song and was therefore left out.

Music genre

Danzig changed the arrangements for the individual songs so that they fit his mix of hard rock , metal and rockabilly . So Aerosmith's Lord of the Thighs was played lower. Also NIB Black Sabbath, the original of which is already very close to the style of Gdansk, has been rearranged so that the bass starts later. Church bells were also added. In ZZ Top's Rough Boy, he was bothered by the breaks before the chorus in the original , which he simply removed in his version. Glenn Danzig himself spoke of a “danzification” of the pieces. Some of the tracks, especially Devil's Angel , Action Woman and With a Girl Like You, are in the style of Danzig's former band The Misfits. The production is rough and without a lot of frills. This makes the album more reminiscent of his early work than more recent releases.
