Skomelno is a municipality with 214 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) in the Czech Republic . It is located three kilometers southeast of Radnice in the Radnitzer Bergland and belongs to the Okres Rokycany . The cadastral area is 248 ha.

geography

The place is located at 478 m above sea level. M. on the hill Hůrka (500 m) at the source of the Skareda brook. In the east and south the extensive forest area extends around the Bechlov (599 m) in the east and the Radeč (721 m) in the southeast. State road 234 runs through Skolmelno between Radnice and the D 5 motorway near Zbiroh .

Neighboring towns are Chomle and Pajzov in the north, Sebečice in the northeast, Lhota pod Radčem in the southeast, Sklená Huť in the south, Přívětice in the southwest, Vranov and Břasy in the west and Radnice in the northwest.

history

The first written mention of the village comes from 1379 as the property of Otík ze Skomelna, but it is believed that Skolmelno is much older. The next owner was Ondřej Čapek, who bought the place in 1400. The families Harant von Polschitz and Cernin von Chudenic belonged to the other landlords . In 1623 the Skomelno manor was annexed to Zbiroh and later Skomelno became part of the Radnice manor .

In 1900 the volunteer fire brigade was founded. In 1926 a memorial to the victims of the First World War was erected. Of the 14 deaths in the Chomle mine disaster in 1937, two miners came from Skomelno.

Population development

In 1850 there were 73 houses in the village where 439 people lived and 30 years later Skomelno had the highest population in its history with 550 inhabitants. After that it declined again and in the first half of the 20th century it was around 400. As a result of the rural exodus it then decreased drastically and in 1970 Skomelno only had 240 inhabitants. The low point was reached in 2000 with 145 permanent residents.
