Snowpiercer ( German snow drill ) is an American science fiction - series based on the stations from May 17, 2020 TNT to be erstausgestrahlt. It launched on Netflix on May 25th. It is based on the film of the same name from 2013 and the French graphic novel Snow Cruiser (Le Transperceneige) .

In November 2015, Marty Adelstein's Tomorrow Studios secured the rights to a series adaptation of the 2013 film Snowpiercer . The film is based on Jacques Lobs and Jean-Marc Rochette's 1982 graphic novel Snow Cruiser . The year after the rights were secured for Tomorrow Studios TNT hired a pilot for the series. The pilot would be directed by Scott Derrickson, based on a script by Josh Friedman , as announced in May 2017. A full series order was placed in January 2018. Friedman left the project that same month due to creative differences with TNT. In February 2018 Friedman was replaced by Graeme Manson as showrunner and the original recordings of the pilot episode were almost completely discarded. The shooting for the new recordings is cited as the main reason for a long delay in publication.
Snowpiercer was conceived as a reboot of the 2013 film of the same name, but it should also differ from it and contain further elements of the graphic novel Le Transperceneige . In the United States, a series release of the first season on TBS in spring 2020 and an order for a second season were announced in May 2019 . In September 2019, the first release of the series was postponed to the channel TNT. While the series is to appear in the United States on TNT, the Huanxi Media Group secured the exclusive rights of the first two seasons for the People's Republic of China . Netflix secured the rights for publication in the remaining countries in May 2019.
For the cast, Daveed Diggs was announced as Layton Well in May 2017 . Further cast members of the first season were announced by October 2018. From then on, additional roles for the second season were announced. The start of filming for the first season was announced in January 2017 for mid-March 2017. On September 25, 2017, Scott Derrickson announced that production had started. The pilot episode was directed by James Hawes and took place between August 20, 2018 and January 24, 2019 in Vancouver . Main filming of the second season started on October 21, 2019 in Langley, also in British Columbia, and should end on March 20, 2020. However, filming had to be interrupted in March 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic .
