Son of a Gun is an Australian - British - Canadian feature film by director Julius Avery from the year 2014 . The lead roles are Brenton Thwaites and Ewan McGregor .

19-year-old JR has been sent to prison for six months. There he meets the felon Brendan, who protects him from a brutal prison gang. In return, when JR is released, he has to help Brendan break out of prison. To this end, he contacts the gang boss Sam, a friend of Brendan's, who provides him with an apartment, money and weapons. This is where JR meets Tasha, with whom he falls in love.
After JR hijacked a helicopter and freed Brendan from prison, the two are hired by Sam for a robbery on a gold mine, in which they loot six gold bars worth four million dollars . They hand the gold over to Sam, who wants to sell it in Melbourne. Later, JR receives a text message from Tasha warning him that Sam has betrayed him and Brendan to the police. They then attack Sam's people when they are about to hand over the bars to the Russian mafia .
After Brendan shot Sam, he bought a sailboat to leave the country. On the boat, he threatens JR with a pistol and wants to fob him off with half a gold bar instead of half the booty. However, JR foresaw this development and therefore brought the gold bars to safety together with Tasha. He forces Brendan to let him go and promises to tell him later where Brendan can find his half of the gold.
Brendan waits for the news from JR in a motel, but is arrested and returned to prison, where he receives a letter from JR, in which he gives him a clue about the gold stash and sends him a photo of the pregnant Tasha.
