Guest Posts

Kool Savas in 2008

The guest musicians represent an essential element of the concept of the sparring mixtapes. A large number of guest rappers were already represented on the first two parts. In an interview Banjo said about the collaborations on sparring and sparring 2 that he is "still happy" with all guest contributions. Two rappers can be heard on all parts of Sparring so far . These are Jonesmann and Curse .

The rappers Kool Savas and Caput as well as the singer Moe Mitchell from the Berlin label Optik Records are represented at Denkmal . Savas already recorded the piece Suicide with Olli Banjo for sparring . Another well-known rapper is the B-Tight who is under contract with Aggro Berlin and appears on the song boxing ring .

In addition, numerous hip-hop musicians, who achieved greater popularity in 2007 and are characterized by the fact that they distance themselves from gangster rap , which had shaped German hip-hop in previous years, can be heard on Sparring 3 . These include Marteria , to whom Olli Banjo was made aware of by Sherin Kürten from the Classic Media agency , Huss & Hodn, Maeckes & Plan B and the Berlin group KIZ

The hip-hop group KIZ

“Schivv sent me the track Pornofilmkäse by Huss & Hodn, which I [...] immediately found very fresh. The beat and the flow just say: I don't give a shit, I don't even want to go up, I just make really cool music. That impresses me [...]. I'm a big KIZ fan too, I feel the boys. […] Or Maeckes & Plan B, who are also out on a completely different film than all these Smack DVD clones, who write a cappellas and consider themselves rappers. I am a friend of characters. All young rappers should take this to heart: There is only one Kool Savas, only one KIZ, only one Olli Banjo. But Smack DVD clones are a dime a dozen. "

Female hip-hop musicians are represented on two pieces of music. These are the rappers Lisi and Jasmin Shakeri. On who? DJ Flow and Manolito Mengele, who appears at concerts as the back-up rapper of Banjo, can be heard. The Frankfurter Tone was involved in the creation of Kollabo des Todes , FR in Zwischen Genie & Wahnsinn and Gregpipe in Ich fliege über Deutschland .

Rapper Planet Asia

Furthermore, the piece Impossible Pt. II to be highlighted. For Sparring 2 , the song Impossible was created with the rapper Samy Deluxe . As part of the creation of Sparring 3 , Olli Banjo wanted to record a continuation of the piece of music. The beat and Banjo's verse were already set, but Samy Deluxe couldn't come up with a satisfying verse for the title. This resulted in Banjo calling rapper Laas Unlimited. According to Olli Banjo, he “ultimately saved the track”.

The rapper Planet Asia appears as the only American guest musician on the song Revolution .

“MeMyselfAndI told me that Planet Asia is currently recording a record with DJ Adlib and him under the project name Da Legacy . They then asked me if I would do a feature on the album, so I asked if he would do a feature on Sparring 3 in return . At the first meeting he was initially very reserved, almost dismissive. [...] Later I gave him the recordings of my Splash! -Appearance shown, he was suddenly very enthusiastic, wanted to go on tour with me and form a Wu-Tang-like hip-hop crew with Savas, Booba and me . [...] (laughs) "

criticism

The website Rap.de wrote in its review that Sparring 3 surpasses the first two parts of the series. The “performance of the rapper” and the work of the producers are highlighted positively.

The e-zine Laut.de rated Sparring 3 with three out of a possible five evaluation points. Editor Gässlein emphasizes in the review that the third part of the series is an improvement on its predecessors, but still remains "far away" from the quality of the albums Lifeshow and Shizogenie . Laut.de rated the solo songs Ich Gehkasten , Grafitti und Rap , Luke Skywalker and Kids positively. In contrast, the contributions by KIZ, Maeckes & Plan B, Kurt Hustle as well as Gregpipe and Laas Unlimited are criticized negatively. The appearances of Lisi and B-Tight are described by the editors as a "positive surprise".

“In terms of rap technique and freshness, banjo has long been an indispensable part of the German top 5. If he tries. Strangely enough, he doesn't always do it in interaction with other rap stars. "
