occupation

Spiel mit dem Tod is a German television film by Christian Görlitz from 2016. It is the ninth film from the Spreewald crime series and was broadcast on ZDF on February 13, 2017 as "Television Film of the Week". The world premiere took place on June 18, 2016 as part of the 12th Festival of German Films in Ludwigshafen.

action

A young couple is on a geocaching tour in the Spreewald. When they have found their “treasure”, the container turns out to be an explosive device and detonates. Mandy Pape and Georg Dissen both die. Commissioner Krüger and Chief Inspector Fichte initially suspect an undiscovered mine from the time of World War II as the cause of the detonation. But it soon becomes clear that it was a targeted attack. The former Bundeswehr soldier Timo Schwalm, who has suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder since his deployment in Afghanistan and was friends with Mandy Pape six months ago, is suspected . According to his mother, he lives in the wilderness in the high forest so that he can better process his memories. She herself lives separated from Timo's father, who was also in combat and has been paraplegic ever since.

While Krüger tries to get in contact with Timo, who is still in hiding, he lets Fichte research the surroundings of the two victims. He learns that Georg Dissen had enemies with his clientele due to his area of responsibility in the social welfare office. Timo Schwalm was also one of his customers, but Krüger no longer considers him to be the culprit, because he had managed to talk to him and so he had a completely new impression of the young man.

Meanwhile, there are increasing indications that Georg Dissen was specifically lured into the high forest. Inspector Krüger finds encrypted messages that a stranger had sent him to arouse the interest of the hobby geocacher.

Krüger follows up on Dissent's colleague Lizzi Zander. She was about to go on maternity leave and feared that Dissen, as he was supposed to take over her vacation replacement, would discover accounting manipulations that she had carried out out of financial difficulties. In her fear, she told her husband whether someone could "keep this dissonance off her neck". Thereupon Paul Zander forged a fatal plan, because on the one hand his best friend was in legal dispute with him because of a rejection notice from Dissen and on the other hand he hoped to be able to blame Timo Schwalm for the planned attack. Paul Zander belongs to a group of neo-Nazis who blame Timo Schwalm for the fact that her comrade Kovacs died in a combat mission in Afghanistan because, in their opinion, Schwalm was not paying enough attention.

Krüger can arrest Zander and his two accomplices as they are about to strike for the "final blow" against Timo Schwalm.

criticism

Rainer Tittelbach from tittelbach.tv rated: “'Playing with death' is primarily a psychological drama that solves the crime case in an incidental and unspectacular way. As always, author Kirchner uses the genre to tell a deep human story that is hardly possible in a detective thriller. The fact that Redl's melancholy has discovered the therapeutic value of talking makes one curious about the upcoming ZDF 'Spreewald thrillers'. "

Ulrich Feld wrote at the Frankfurter Neue Presse : “The Spreewald confronts filmmakers with a problem: it tempts them to let their thoughts wander, to let their imaginations run wild. To get lost in all the jungle-like tangle. The often finely ramified narrative structure of the films with many flashbacks on the one hand reflects the river landscape and also stands in the way of a stringent narrative style. "

Axel Weidemann from the FAZ said: “The loneliness in the forest has to endure a lot in the ninth episode of the 'Spreewald crime novel'. The screenwriter Thomas Kirchner pulls out all the stops. It's about war, illness, jealousy, murder, prevented homecoming, wounded pride, destroyed youth and suppressed memories. More tragedy is hardly possible. The director Christian Görlitz has to work hard to bring all of this under one roof. He made a film that demands a lot of theatrical sense from its audience. "
