Springborn is a family name of northern German origin.

Origin and meaning

The name Springborn goes back to the place where the first name bearer lived, which was located near a Springborn, i.e. H. lived in a spring or a well ( mnd. sprink = 'source', mnd. born = 'fountain'). The name originated in the Low German- speaking area, which reflects its current distribution in Germany. A derivation of the name from the place Springborn in East Prussia is unlikely, since the surname was not represented in relevant numbers before 1945 and thus before the flight and expulsion of the Germans east of Oder and Neisse, neither in West nor East Prussia, nor outside the Szczecin area in Western Pomerania was. Rather, both the East Prussian place and the surname go back to the same meaning.

In terms of the low population density, the proportion is particularly high in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . If one looks at the surname Springborn on distribution maps and selects the relative frequency, which includes the population density, it is noticeable that the majority of the name bearers are distributed in the Uckermark district in Brandenburg and, to a lesser extent, in its neighboring districts: the former Mecklenburg districts -Strelitz and Uecker-Randow in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and the districts of Oberhavel , Barnim and Märkisch-Oderland in Brandenburg. This accumulation can be an indication of the origin of the surname. However, the family name does not have to go back to a single origin. Theoretically, several families with the same name can also have arisen parallel to one another, which only have the meaning of the name in common.
