history

Former St. Bernward Church (2013) location

With the introduction of the Reformation in the 16th century, the population of Groß Ilsede and the surrounding villages became Evangelical-Lutheran. The few Catholics in Groß Ilsede were looked after by the parish in Steinbrück . Only after the Ilseder Hütte was built around 1860, Catholics began to settle again in large numbers in Groß Ilsede.

On May 15, 1881, the foundation stone for the first small St. Bernward Church was laid; it is still in a side chapel of today's church. It was inaugurated on May 15, 1884 by Vicar General Paasch. In 1901 chaplain Augustin Arend took over pastoral care as the first local clergyman; before that, priests from Steinbrück or Peine held Holy Mass . Groß Ilsede was at this time a parish vicarie of the Peine parish . In 1946, the community expanded considerably with the influx of people who had been expelled from their homes , mostly from Silesia . On August 1, 1949, the curative community of St. Bernward was established.

In 1953 the building site for the new church was purchased because the previous church had become too small. On April 26, 1959, the foundation stone of today's church was laid, which was consecrated on April 10, 1960 by Heinrich Maria Janssen . The old church was closed and sold to a stonemason in 1969. As early as April 1, 1960, the Kuratiegemeinde had been elevated to a parish. In 1972 the sanctuary was redesigned following the decisions of the Second Vatican Council .

On September 1, 2008, the parish expanded to include the churches in Hohenhameln , Lengede and Steinbrück . The St. Thomas Church in Adenstedt , which previously belonged to the parish , was profaned in 2009 .

In 2018 the church was renovated. The artist Lilian Moreno Sánchez from Chile designed new stained glass windows for the nave with motifs from the Passion and Resurrection of Jesus Christ , which were realized by Peters stained glass in Neuenbeken . The baptistery got a new place.

Architecture and equipment

The church, built according to plans by Josef Fehlig , is around 75 meters above sea level and has 320 seats. The stained glass windows in the Marienkapelle come from the old church, they show the saints Bernward and Godehard .

The organ was built from 1974 to 1976 in several stages by the Stockmann brothers .
