The Church of St. Elisabeth is a Roman Catholic church in Rockershausen, which belongs to Altenkessel , a district of the Saarland capital of Saarbrücken . She bears the patronage of St. Elisabeth of Thuringia . In the list of monuments of the Saarland, the church is a single monument listed.

local community

The parish of St. Elisabeth and the neighboring parish of St. Johannes Baptista in Altenkessel formed a parish community in the deanery of Saarbrücken ( Diocese of Trier ). With effect from January 1, 2013, the two parishes were merged to form the parish and parish of St. Nicholas with the parish church of St. Johannes Baptista. Together with the parish of St. Barbara Klarenthal, it forms the Altenkessel parish community .

history

The church was built from 1928 to 1929 based on a design by the architects Ludwig Becker and Anton Falkowski ( Mainz ). The local construction management was practiced by Dipl.-Ing. Peters ( Nalbach ).

In 1954 the church underwent a restoration . In 2007 there were restoration measures in the interior.

Architecture and equipment

The church building is a hall church in an expressionist style. The interior of the nave by columns in a wide nave and two narrow aisles divided. To the north of the nave is the chancel with a semicircular apse . The tower of the church is attached to the nave to the west in the area of ​​the south facade .

The equipment of the church is the large part altarpiece in sgraffito technique on the rear wall of the presbytery, which the rose miracle is St. Elizabeth. It was created by painter and restorer Arnold Mrziglod ( Tholey ).

Other items of equipment are the windows made in 1954 . They replaced the original windows that were destroyed in World War II and showed motifs from the life of Jesus and St. Elizabeth. To the right and left of the altar are two wall paintings with resurrection scenarios . The way of the cross of the church is kept in simple figurative representation.

organ

The organ of the church was built in the late 1950s by Anton Schwenk for the Munich Kolping House, which is located in the middle of the city center near the Stachus . Around 1988 the organ was dismantled and stored at the Munich organ building company Wilhelm Stöberl , who sold it around 1990 to the parish of St. Elisabeth Altenkessel. The instrument, which is set up on a gallery , has six registers divided between a manual and a pedal . It is the only known instrument by Anton Schwenk with mechanical action, although the playing and stop action of the sub-bass is pneumatic. The disposition is as follows:

Bells

As for the Ev. Church Altenkessel so in 1954 the Saarlouiser bell foundry in Saarlouis-Fraulautern, which had been founded by Karl (III) Otto from the bell foundry Otto in Bremen-Hemelingen and the Saarlander Aloys Riewer in 1953, poured two for the St. Elisabeth Church Altenkessel Bronze bells with the striking notes: e '- a'.
