St. Georg in Bachern

The parish church of St. Georg is a monument in Bachern near Friedberg .

history

The former parish church of St. Georg (today St. Vitus' cemetery chapel ) was demolished in 1831, except for the choir , and it was decided to build a new building elsewhere. For the construction according to plans by Johann Michael Voit , the foundation stone was laid on April 17, 1831 and the church was consecrated by Bishop Ignaz Albert on September 29, 1833 . It is a late classicist building at the turn of the neo-Romanesque period. Only a few years later, the style experienced strong rejection; The quality of the sober architecture has only recently been appreciated. The original interior design and painting was revised in 1898 but restored in 1987/88. However, the ceiling paintings have been preserved since the creation in 1831. The original altars were replaced by those of the Augsburg Cathedral after 1863 , after they had become superfluous in the course of the regotisation .

Furnishing

inner space

The ceiling paintings are by Josef Kober from Göggingen and show the adoration of the apocalyptic lamb in the choir and the battle of St. George with the dragon in the nave . The former has its model in the paintings of Johann Joseph Anton Huber in Baindlkirch . The high altar was donated by Auxiliary Bishop Westernach in 1694 for the Joseph Chapel in the cathedral. The altarpiece and the painting in the extract is by Johann Georg Knappich (1637–1704) and show the birth of Christ and the Holy Spirit with two putti . The two angel figures on the gables are from the late 17th century. The two side altars were built shortly after the Thirty Years War . The right one was donated by Canon Herbstheim in 1658. The subject of the altarpiece by Johann Christoph Storer is the legend of St. Simpert, a local saint in Augsburg, who saves a child who was stolen by a wolf. The figure of St. Anthony of Padua can be found between two angel figures . The left side altar was donated by Vicar Miller in 1657. In the altarpiece by Jonas Umbach (1624–1693) from 1657, influenced by Venetian Renaissance painting , the martyrdom of St. Apollonia is shown. The apostle Thomas is shown as a figure . The baptismal font from 1734 is considered to be the main work of Johann Caspar Öberl . Other figures in the church represent St. Nicholas (around 1510/20), Maria and Johannes (late 17th century) and Saints Sebastian , Margaretha and Barbara (around 1720/30). The crucifix is stylistically similar to that in St. Thomas in Rederzhausen and from the end of the 18th century.
