history

Obereschenbach, which formerly belonged to the Hundsfeld parish , became the seat of this parish office when Hundsfeld moved away in 1938 . The previous church of today's church was built in the late Gothic period, roughly at the same time as the Hammelburg parish church of St. John the Baptist . The current church was built between 1898 and 1902 in the neo-Romanesque style. The foundation stone was laid on April 23, 1899, the feast day of the church patron St. George. On June 8, 1901, according to reports in the Hammelburger Journal , the church was consecrated by the Würzburg bishop Ferdinand von Schlör . In 1976 the church was extensively renovated. In 2016 it received a new slate roof. The organ from GF Steinmeyer & Co. , Öttingen, was overhauled.

description

The church has a single nave with a round choir in the east and a 48 m high steeple in the west in the central axis of the nave . The choir has three windows, the nave with a gable roof has four window axes . The windows are arched . The church tower has a pointed roof and sound windows , each with three narrow column-supported round arches on pillars.

Furnishing

The high altar was built by the Driesler company in Würzburg and shows the figures of St. Barbara , St. Josef , St. Klara and St. Antonius of Padua . To the left of the choir arch is the Marien Altar, to the right of it the St. George's Altar. Both have stone figures by the sculptor Valentin Weidner from Bad Kissingen . The altar of Mary can be used as a holy grave during Holy Week . On the south wall there is a crucifixion group from the old church and the figure of St. Laurentius , on the north wall the figures of St. Katharina and St. Barbara from the church of Hundsfeld , in the anteroom under the tower the figure of the church patron St. George from the old church.

Peal

From the time the church was rebuilt until 1942, three bells from the Klaus bell foundry in Heidingsfeld had rung . After that, the two larger bells were delivered and never returned. In 1948/49, two new bells were procured from the Grüninger bell foundry in Villingen and Neu-Ulm to replace them .
