St. Georg in Thuine

The Church of St. George is the parish church of the Roman Catholic parish of St. Georg Thuine and as an interdenominational church at the same time Church of the Evangelical-Uniate church Freren -Thuine. The church only uses these on Good Friday and on the Day of Repentance and Prayer as well as for casualia .

Parish area

The area of the Parish Thuine includes the political municipality Thuine with its peasant communities and neighborhoods as well as the district of Venslage belonging to the city of Freren .

Together with Thuine, this forms both a church and a school association.

Parcels

The parish village of Messingen was removed from the parish and raised to an independent parish in 1806. The Brümsel district , which today belongs to the municipality of Messingen, remained with the mother parish in Thuine until 1921 and was only then officially changed to the parish of Messingen.

The villages of Suttrup and Lohe (today districts of the city of Freren) also belonged to the parish of Thuine . After the new church in Suttrup was named in 1923, the two villages were raised to a curate at the same time.

The choir windows of the parish church are reminiscent of the villages of Brümsel and Suttrup, which belong to the parish of Thuine. This was donated by a family from each of these three villages.

Structure

tower

The Romanesque tower is the oldest and most distinctive part of the parish church. It is dated around the 12th century and is made of boulders and rubble stones. The tower received its characteristic lantern-shaped tower dome in 1851.

There are two sound holes each in the north and south walls of the tower, while in the west there is one sound hole behind which the bell chamber is located.

There are three bells hanging in the bell house. The youngest and smallest is from 1962. It is also used as an angelus bell .

Inside the tower there is a striking barrel vault that has been partially exposed.

Nave

View into the choir of the parish church before the renovation in 1972

The nave is an east-facing Gothic hall with a 5/8 choir closure . The different buttresses and the different colors of the built-in sandstone speak in favor of a later expansion . The interior of the parish church impressed with its baroque furnishings until the major interior renovation in 1972 . These included the imposing baroque high altar , the two side altars , but also the pulpit , communion bench and choir stalls . While the painting of the high altar "Mariae Annunciation" and the apostle figures Peter and Paul adorned the choir until another renovation in 2000, the altars, pulpit and communion bench were removed in 1972.

A new objectivity and centering on the table of the word ( ambo ) and the table of the meal (people's altar ) - shaped by the implementation of the liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council - should be introduced and thus symbolized for the faithful. This is illustrated by the sandstone combination of ambo, celebration altar and tabernacle column , which were purchased in the 1980s and still adorn the chancel today. The organ was built in 1830 by Joachim Wenthin . The slider chest instrument has 12 registers on a manual and pedal . The playing and stop actions are mechanical.

Church institutions

Cemetery cottage

The churchyard house, also known as the “grotto”, stands at the northeast corner of the old churchyard that surrounds the parish church. In the past it already served as a class and catechesis room, today it houses a youth room on the right-hand side, known as the "Grotto". Behind the main portal, which is crowned by a Christ monogram Px, is a storage room. In the left part of the house, a partially handicapped-accessible toilet has been set up, which is open for masses and other worship services.

Pastor Dall House

The old rectory, which is located around a hundred meters from the parish church, has been used exclusively for local groups and associations since 1975. It can accommodate small groups, but larger gatherings and events can also be held there. The pastor's office and the new rectory from 1974 are spatially attached to the Pastor-Dall-Haus.

graveyards

The forest cemetery was laid out in the north of the village and around 500 m from the parish church as early as 1951. It is very quiet and there is a way of the cross around its old part. The modern cemetery cross was integrated in the rear part of the cemetery with the surrounding priestly graves. The pastors dean Heinrich Hinrichs (he worked in Thuine from 1939 to 1962) and Clemens Möllerhaus (he worked in Thuine from 1962 to 1970) found their final resting place in the priestly graves there. The complex offers space for at least four more graves. However, other priestly graves are not occupied due to the unattractive peripheral location of the complex.

In addition to the priestly graves at the forest cemetery mentioned above, there are other priestly graves from Thuin pastors in the old churchyard, right next to the church. The other graves and tombs of the Thuiner population were completely removed to the chagrin of many. The grave of the famous artist Heinrich Weltring can no longer be made out either.

Church customs

In the parish of St. Georg Thuine, both the solemn feast of the patron saint St. Georg on April 23, as well as the Feast of Corpus Christi are celebrated together with the Thuiner Franciscan Sisters .

The high mass on the occasion of the patronage festival is celebrated alternately in the parish church and in the mother house church.

The solemn celebration of Corpus Christi begins on the evening of the feast of Corpus Christi with a solemn mass in the motherhouse church. The subsequent solemn procession (approx. 1.5 km) leads past a station at the boys' boarding school on the monastery grounds and goes via Niederthuine and the southern part of the village of Thuine and the primary school to the parish church. There is the last stop and the solemn sacramental final blessing on the grounds of the old churchyard.
