The Catholic parish church of St. Georg is located in Niederrieden in the Unterallgäu district in Bavaria . The church is a listed building.

history

inside view

A first church consecration of the place mentioned in 838 took place in 1483. The core of the nave as well as the church tower and the choir date from this time. The sacristy was built between 1679 and 1693 . The interior was redesigned towards the end of the 17th century. This happened under Abbot Gordian Scherrich of the Ottobeuren monastery . Major measures on the church were carried out in 1864 (general overhaul of the exterior), 1871/72 (interior restoration), 1908/1909 (renovation with draining of the outer walls), 1964/65 (inside and outside), 1982 (outside), 1986 (inside) and 2015/16 (exterior renovation and roof structure).

Building description

South porch

The nave consists of four window axes and has a needle cap barrel . With the exception of two semicircular windows in the western axis, all other windows are designed with a stepped round arch. Two simple buttresses with water hammer are located on the south side of the nave. Inside on the west side there is a two-storey gallery . The little indented choir adjoins the nave with a 5/8 end. This consists of a yoke and has a barrel vault with stitch caps . The tower is located on the west side of the nave and has a gable roof covered. On the two upper floors there are corner pilaster strips with round arch friezes. The lower floors of the tower are not structured. Coupled, ogival sound arcades are located on the upper floor, these are available on all sides of the church tower. The name Renov. 1909 can be found in the tower gable. A round-arched door leads into the sacristy on the north side between the choir and nave. The door wing made of oak wood with twisted columns and Hermes pilasters dates from around 1680. The sacristy is closed on three sides and consists of two floors. The sacristy is covered with a hipped roof . The access to the pulpit is outside on the north side of the nave. This dates from the 18th century and is provided with a pent roof. The vestibule on the south side dates from the late 18th century. The porch, which is covered with a gable roof, has a curved gable. Immediately on the east side of the vestibule is a niche for a dungeon Christ.

Furnishing

The high altar is a marbled wooden structure and was consecrated in 1791. On the free-standing sarcophagus-shaped cafeteria there is a rotating tabernacle . On the scrolls of the tabernacle there are wooden figures of the evangelists Luke and Matthew . The tabernacle is crowned by a representation of the Lamb of God . Luminous putti are on the curved side parts, the tabernacle is closed at the side with volutes, on which there are small wooden figures of the two other evangelists Johannes and Markus . The reredos are also made of marbled wood. This is gold-plated and adorned with Rocailles decor . The altar panel shows the martyrdom of St. George . In addition there are free columns with concave reserves. On the right and left the reredos are made up of wooden figures of St. Peter and Paul limited.

Figure of the left side altar

The two side altars were consecrated in the same year as the high altar and are also made of marbled wood. In both there is no altar sheet, but a wooden figure above the cafeteria. On the left is the figure of St. Sebastian is shown, on the right a seated Madonna from around 1520. This is marked with HHO and the master of Ottobeuren. Volute templates are on the side of both altars. On these more wooden figures are attached, so on the left are St. Vitus and St. Catherine and on the right John the Baptist and St. Magdalena depicted. The extracts from the side altars are curved several times and show the eye of God on the left and the dove of the Holy Spirit on the right .

Figure of Jesus Christ at the pulpit

The font made of red marble dates from the first half of the 18th century. There is a small wooden figure of John the Baptist on the lid . The basin is ribbed and rests on a bulging column. The pulpit consists of a polygonal basket. This is structured by rotated free columns. In the fields there is a figure of Jesus Christ and other figures of the four church fathers . The pulpit was made as a marbled wooden structure at the beginning of the 18th century. On the cover there are putti and the figure of John the Baptist.

In the church is an 18th century Way of the Cross consisting of fourteen stations . A painting of the Immaculata from the 17th or 18th century is in the choir above the sacristy. The painting of the Crucified was created around 1700. The paintings of the Man of Sorrows and Our Lady of Sorrows date from the first half of the 19th century .

There are several wooden figures in the church. The depiction of Joseph with the baby Jesus, the Vesper image , the crucifix with Mary and John, the lecture cross and the dungeon Christ in the niche next to the southern porch date from the 18th century . The figure of the standing Mother of God comes from the last quarter of the 15th century . In the church there is a pastor's grave from the 18th century. Two more parish tombs are attached to the southern porch.

The confessionals are made of oak and date from 1780. The curly crowns of the three-part confessionals are adorned with wooden figures. In the northern confessional there is the figure of a paradise angel, in the southern one the archangel Michael as a soul weigher. Two rows of lay chairs in the nave date from 1700. The front parapets of the lay chairs contain twisted columns, the oak pillars are carved with leaf volutes.
