The listed Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Georg is located in Tschirma , a district of the town of Berga / Elster in the Greiz district in Thuringia . St. George is part of the parish Tschirma the parish area Tschirma in the church district Greiz of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .

history

A legend reports that after the old church had become too small, the new church was to be located in the larger and richer, but later, Neugernsdorf village . After the building materials were brought to the building site there, however, they were brought back to Tschirma overnight. So the new church was built in Tschirma in the 13th century. Initially, the church was under the Mildenfurth Monastery of the Premonstratensians , but in 1432 was already Tschirma independent parish.

The late Romanesque hall church has a recessed choir tower , which dates back to the early 13th century with its narrow windows, and a narrow semicircular apse attached to it . The cultivation in the west did not arise until the 20th century. The nave is covered with slate . In 1703, when the church was comprehensively redesigned in Baroque style , the stone tower received an eight-sided slated top, which is covered by a dome on which an open lantern sits. The interior of the nave is spanned by a wooden beam ceiling, the choir is covered by a mirror vault with the family coat of arms of the House of Reuss . The parapets of the two-storey galleries show biblical scenes in simple painting. The church furnishings date from the 17th and 18th centuries. The on the south side of the triumphal arch standing pulpit dates from the late 18th century. The sound cover is decorated with angels. In the course of the renovation in 1967, the shrine of a late Gothic winged altar was returned to its place as an altarpiece . His carved figures under a canopy show St. George , Anna selbdritt , Maria with the baby Jesus and St. Laurentius . The organ with 12 registers , divided into 2 manuals and a pedal , was built in 1885 by Richard Kreutzbach and redesigned in 1939 by Alfred Schmeisser .
