The Catholic Parish Church of St. John the Baptist in Borg

The Church of St. John the Baptist is a Roman Catholic parish church in Borg , a district of the municipality of Perl , Merzig-Wadern district , Saarland . The church bears the patronage of John the Baptist and is listed as an individual monument in the Saarland monuments list.

history

In a visitation report of the parish of Perl from the year 1569, Borg was referred to as “Perla's accessories” and not as a branch , from which it can be concluded that at that time there was no sacred building in the village. Not much later, however, a church building was erected, which was converted into a parish church at the beginning of 1723 and suffr by Johannes Matthias, Episcopus Resmensis, on June 12, 1723. Trev was consecrated in honor of John the Baptist . After 1728 a church tower with a pointed helmet was built . In 1801 the parish of Borg was assigned to the diocese of Metz , but came back to the diocese of Trier in 1817 .

In 1820 the church was enlarged by half and a choir extension was added. Towards the end of the 19th century, the church and the rectory were in poor condition, with the result that there was no pastor in Borg between 1892 and 1898 . In 1918 preparations began for the new building of the church, which was carried out from 1921 to 1922 according to plans by Josef Monz ( Trier ). The solemn benedication could take place on May 14, 1922. The consecration by the Trier auxiliary bishop Antonius Mönch took place on September 4, 1924.

Shortly after the start of the Second World War , the church tower was blown up on September 19, 1939, and the nave was also destroyed.

From 1948, the church was rebuilt according to the original plans. Architect H. Ulrich (Perl) was responsible for the local construction management. The foundation stone was laid on October 3, 1948, and on June 17, 1951, the rebuilt church was consecrated by Prelate Kammer, Canon of Trier. On November 16, 1954, the solemn consecration by Trier Bishop Matthias Wehr could take place.

Furnishing

View inside the church

The church and its surroundings include three baroque altars , a chalice-shaped baptismal font made of sandstone with a lid and a cross made of gilded oak , which was created in 1803 by the sculptor Johann Bohr ( Tünsdorf ), and a way of the cross made of sandstone outside the church, also created by Bohr in 1819 , of which 10 of the 14 stations are still preserved today, albeit heavily weathered. Other furnishings include the 1997 altar by Joan Thimmel (Borg) and a Way of the Cross from 1959. The chancel and the triumphal arch were painted in 1956.

Instead of an originally existing nativity scene by Sebastian Osterrieder that was lost in the Second World War, the former nativity scene by this artist from Munich's Ludwigskirche could be purchased in 1954 .
