history

Since the number of Catholics in Braunschweig, especially in the west of the city, had increased considerably in the 19th century, the Catholic Church bought properties on Madamenweg and Goslarschen Strasse. In Madamenweg 164, a catholic emergency church was set up in the hall of the former restaurant “Schweizer Halle”, near today's church . On November 24 or 27, 1894, their benediction was given by Dechant Karl Grube. She was the second post-Reformation Catholic Church in Brunswick, was once a daughter church of St. Nicolai Church . Catholic church records have been kept in St. Joseph since 1898 .

About seven years after it was put into operation, the emergency church was so dilapidated that it had to be closed. The foundation stone of today's church was laid in October 1902, and it was consecrated on December 20, 1903. Around 1910 the former emergency church was demolished and replaced by a restoration and residential building. On August 5, 1944 and October 11, 1944, the church was badly damaged by bombing. In 1956 the pastoral care district ( Vikarie ) of the Church of St. Joseph was raised to a parish, on April 1, 1960 to a parish.

Since November 1st, 2006 the church belongs to the parish of St. Aegidien , the parish of St. Joseph was dissolved at that time.
