history

In the 16th century, the population and St. Bartholomew's Church in Hötensleben became Protestant-Lutheran through the introduction of the Reformation .

In the second half of the 19th century, more and more Catholics settled in Hötensleben again, as mining in the Helmstedt brown coal district , the sugar factories in the region and, from 1880, the Hötensleben briquette factory in Victoria offered new job opportunities. Initially, the St. Pankratius Church in Hamersleben, just under 10 kilometers away, was the closest Catholic place of worship. From 1861, Catholic services were held in various secular rooms in Hötensleben. From 1865, Karl Köster was a missionary vicar for Hötensleben, and in the same year a plot of land on the northern edge of Hötensleben was purchased. A mission house was built there in 1866, and school rooms were set up there by the end of the year. After its inauguration on January 8, 1867, the services also took place in the mission house. The rectory, which has since been sold again, was built in 1875.

On March 17, 1890, the groundbreaking for the church building north of the mission house took place, and the foundation stone was laid on April 22. On 21 October 1891, followed consecration of the church by the Bishop Augustine Gockel of the diocese of Paderborn , was one of the Hötensleben then. On March 31, 1906, the parish vicarie Hötensleben, which had previously belonged to Hamersleben, was raised to an independent parish . From Christmas 1915 to August 1917, Pastor Gustav Vogt , who later died in the Dachau concentration camp, was vicar in Hötensleben.

On April 12, 1945, Hötensleben was liberated by American armored forces, but they were relieved by Soviet troops on July 3 . From 1945 to 1990 the church was less than a kilometer from the inner-German border . On May 26, 1952, the border was completely sealed off by the People's Police , which had a significant negative impact on Hötensleben. From 1952 to 1957, no church services were allowed to take place in Hötensleben; Instead, other nearby churches such as St. Josef in Barneberg and Herz Jesu in Völpke were used . On November 1st, 1987, Johannes Braun , the Apostolic Administrator of Magdeburg, consecrated a new altar .

Pastor Winfried Hoffmann (1929–2008), who came from the Church of St. Joseph and St. Theresa of the Child of Jesus in Weferlingen in 1972 and retired in 2005, was the last local pastor of the church. From June 1, 2005, the church in Hötensleben was also looked after by the parish Herz Jesu in Eilsleben .

On October 13, 2007 the community association "Eilsleben - Großalsleben - Hadmersleben - Hamersleben - Hötensleben - Klein Oschersleben - Oschersleben - Sommerschenburg - Völpke" was established, to which the church belonged from then on.
