History and architecture

The community was first mentioned as a parish in 1123 . The cruciform, in the older parts plastered quarry stone with a gabled roof covered. The apse closes polygonally , the tower stands on the west side. In the north and south walls of the nave , parts of the Romanesque core are still preserved.

The south transept was built in 1595 as a burial chapel for the von Spiegel family on Borlinghausen . It was built by Catarina Kanne, Werner von Spiegel's widow, who had her husband, who died in 1595, first buried there. In 1599 she was buried there too. The couple's grave slabs are still preserved today, but were moved to the branch church in Borlinghausen around 1900 .

Werner's grave slab, measuring 0.96 m × 200 m, showed a man in iron armor with a millstone collar and sash in a bas-relief in front of a flat, semicircular niche. On the edge there are four coats of arms and the inscription "Ao 1594 APRIL 26TH IS IN GODT.S.DER EDLER.AND ERNWERTER WERNER SPIEGEL.SPERBMARSCHALCK DS: GG". The equally large and identically designed grave slab of Catarina showed a woman in rich renaissance costume with a bonnet and the same collar as that of the man and with the inscription “Ao 1599 DE 6 AVGVS IS CELEBRALLY ASLEEP IN GODT: DIEEDLE VD TVUGENTREICHE CATARINA SPEIGEL ZV PICHELEH: BORN MARSCHALKANNE .S: GG ". Heinrich Gröninger is believed to be the sculptor of the reliefs .

The west tower of the church was also built around 1595 . In 1870 the choir and sacristy were renewed using a rectangular construction. The north transept was added in 1895, while the round arch frieze was attached to the eaves side - probably based on the old model - as early as 1885. A round arch portal with an inscription was added in the south wall . The western portal in the south transept shows the construction date and a donor coat of arms. The east mullion window is walled up. A flat ceiling was installed in the interior and the choir was equipped with a groined vault . The decorative interior from 1899 was reconstructed in 1994 based on findings.

Most of the colored windows and furnishings date from around 1900. The wooden figure of an Immaculata from the end of the 17th century is remarkable .

The former rectory on the west side is a half-timbered building from 1842.
