history

West view

In Liber valoris from the year 1308 a church in Merzenich is mentioned in writing for the first time. Even then, Merzenich was an independent parish and belonged to the extensive deanery of Jülich in the Archdiocese of Cologne . The respective dukes of Jülich had the right of collation . Girbelsrath and Miesheim with their branch churches have been part of the Merzenich parish since the Middle Ages . While Miesheim went under in the early modern times, Girbelsrath remained as a branch of Merzenich until the parish elevation on February 12, 1849. In the course of the restructuring of the church landscape during the French era , the parish came to the newly founded diocese of Aachen in 1802. This was dissolved again in 1825 and Merzenich fell back to the Archdiocese of Cologne. Since 1930 the place belongs again to the re-established diocese of Aachen.

On January 1, 2016, the parish of St. Laurentius / Merzenich was significantly enlarged through the incorporation of the previously independent parishes of St. Amandus / Girbelsrath, St. Gregorius / Golzheim and St. Lambertus / Morschenich.

Building history

At the end of the 19th century, the population of Merzenich had grown so much that the previous parish church on Lindenplatz , a building from the 13th to 17th centuries, had become too small. Thus, a new building was decided at another location. The Cologne architect Theodor Roß was commissioned to plan the construction of today's parish church . The church was finally built between 1898 and 1901 on Lindenstrasse. Even before the full completion of the new church was the first on November 25, 1900 Holy Mass celebrated and the new church by the dean of the deanery Dueren, Otto Josef Lohmann , benediziert be. The solemn church consecration and consecration of the high altar took place on June 12, 1902 by the Cologne auxiliary bishop and later archbishop Antonius Fischer . Since then, the old church has fallen into disrepair and is now only preserved as a ruin.

As a result of the Second World War , the church suffered severe damage. The spire was completely destroyed by shelling and after the war it was replaced by a flat roof, which gave the church tower its distinctive appearance. The roof turret on the crossing also fell victim to the war.

In 1970 the church chancel was redesigned according to plans by Wolfgang Bley. In 1989 the church roof was renovated and in 1992 the masonry of the bell tower was renovated. The interior of the church was renovated between 2011 and 2014. First, the ribbed vaults were secured because they had deep cracks. In 2013 and 2014, the completely whitewashed paintings from the time the church was built were uncovered, restored and supplemented, thus returning the interior to its original state.

Building description

Main portal

St. Laurentius is a three-aisled hall church made of bricks in the neo-Gothic style with a four-story bell tower in the west, transept and choir closed on seven sides in the east. The interior is spanned by ribbed vaults.

Furnishing

In the church there is a neo-Gothic high altar , which was made by the local carpenters Gebr. Pütz around 1900. Werner Pütz carried out the carving work. There is also an Antwerp reredos in the church. This was taken over from the old Merzenich church and made from walnut wood in the 16th century. In 1975 it was restored and now serves as a side altar. A second side altar is the "alabaster altar", which was also taken over from the old church. This originally comes from the Cologne church Klein St. Martin . It is believed that the Antwerp carved altar also comes from this church, but this has not been proven.

organ

The organ was built in 1997 in the Schumacher Orgelbau workshop in Eupen (B). The French instrument has 29 registers on two manuals and a pedal . The playing and stop actions are mechanical.
