St. Maria (Großsaara)
The Church of St. Maria is in Großsaara , a district of the Saara municipality in the Greiz district in Thuringia . The parish belongs to the parish area of the village church St. Gangloff in the parish of Gera of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .
Building description
The medieval hall church was fundamentally renewed in 1734–49. In 1863 a historic church tower was added to the west and a sacristy to the east. In 1974 the sacristy was demolished and the nave was redesigned. Under the western organ loft of the nave one was winter church furnishings. 1986–90 the exterior was renovated . On the long sides of the nave, the two-storey galleries are led up to the ceiling on wooden supports . Across the center room is a wooden, on a wide cornice stucco aufsitzendes mirror vault with frames made of stucco. Flat stucco belt arches are laid in the distance between the gallery supports . The interior is visually effectively combined by combining the elevation of the walls and the structure of the vault .
Furnishing
In the choir is a pulpit altar with pilasters , beams and tympanum . The coat of arms of the Counts of Reuss-Gera is on the pulpit . Four late Gothic , carved statuettes of saints and one depicting Christ on the Ascension . A kneeling baptismal angel comes from the 8th century. In the church floor there are several heavily worn tombstones . On the north wall there are parts of epitaphs from the Baroque and Rococo periods .
The organ with 12 registers , divided into 2 manuals and pedal, is in the organ gallery . It was built in 1923 by Ernst Poppe & Sohn .
