Architecture and history

The church was built around 1170 in Romanesque style. Quartzite , which occurs in the vicinity, served as building material . On the west side of the church is the 17 meter high rectangular tower with twelve sound openings. It is covered with a gable roof. The nave extends to the east.

The church served as a pilgrimage church and was therefore given a side aisle around 1200 . This is followed by three large arches that can be seen on the south and west of the Marienkapelle located there. Four small Romanesque window openings have been preserved on the north side of the nave. Originally there was a semicircular apse on the east side of the nave . In 1629 the church was damaged in the Thirty Years War . After 1690 renovations took place in which the apse was removed and the church was extended to the east. Since then, a high choir with a straight degree has formed the degree.

Interior

The interior of the church has a flat roof. There is a triumphal arch between the nave and the choir. Originally there was also a large round arch between the tower and the ship. The baroque pulpit altar in the church was created in 1747 by the Gommeran carpenter Gottfried Wendell and the Magdeburg sculptor Franz Mayer . Above the sound cover a pelican can be seen feeding its young with its blood. It is framed by two angels who stand for love and loyalty.

There are historic choir stalls on the sides of the choir. It comes from the Plötzky monastery, which was dissolved in 1538 . The torso of a Pietà in the church and a Madonna in the Chapel of Mary could also come from the monastery. They were created around 1420 and were originally designed in color. The damage to the figures may have occurred during the Thirty Years War. Your current condition should be a reminder of this war. A baroque figure of Christ as a risen man with a victory flag is on the north wall of the choir. To the right of the altar hangs a modern picture created by the Schönebeck painter Eva Maria Heseler . In 2006, Heseler created pictures of angels for the balustrade fields of the gallery . The galleries date from 1663 and were necessary at that time to meet the increasing number of church visitors after the end of the Thirty Years' War.

The font from the Romanesque period stands in the choir. The baptismal font made of sandstone is decorated with a Romanesque round arch frieze.

There are also several memorial plaques in the church. On the north side there is an old plaque giving the names of the first pastors of the church after the Reformation .

The organ of the church dates from 1863 and was created by the organ builder August Troch from Neuhaldensleben .

From 1984 to 1987 an extensive renovation of the church was carried out on the initiative of the residents of Plötzky. Debris deposits on the rear side, which had caused moisture in the masonry, were removed. The walls were dried over several years. In the course of the renovations, the graves of a Schönebecker Saline lord, a child and a pastor were found in the floor of the church. The graves remained in the ground and were covered with new plates. The walls were newly plastered and whitewashed. Murals discovered during the work were in such poor condition that they could not be preserved. Only in the area between the windows on the north wall have remains been preserved. During the work, the altar was also restored. The restoration was carried out by the restorer Anna-Maria Meussling .

There are two larger bells in the church tower. The older Christ bell was cast in Apolda in 1863 and bears the inscription God bless our dear Plötzky . The second bell was cast in Lauchhammer on April 13, 2004 . The bell, financed by donations, bears the text: Christ speaks: I live and you should also live.

Lady Chapel

There was a small sacristy on the south side of the nave . In 2004 she was included in the newly built Marienkapelle. Two Romanesque window openings were opened and glazed again. The new building was also made of quartzite and fits into the appearance of the church. The chapel is used as a meeting room and winter church. It is equipped with a toilet, underfloor heating and a kitchen. Old and new windows were designed by the artist Hanna Strathausen from Biesenthal and manufactured by Hans and Birk Losert from Halberstadt . A ceramic figure donated to the church in 2011 comes from the sculptor Dario Malkowski . It depicts Pontius Pilate washing his hands in innocence.

The altar in the chapel has a Gothic carved altar. It was originally located in the Sankt-Nikolai-Kirche in Rössen , which had been abandoned and only exists as a ruin, and came to Plötzky in 1973. Of the carved altar originally made as a winged altar, only the central shrine is preserved. The approaches for the wings are closed with wood. On the shrine, Dorothea with the basket, a Maria standing on a crescent with the naked baby Jesus, Katharina with the wheel and Nicholas are depicted. The representation is framed by a gold frame. The work was probably made around 1480. With this altar, the church belongs to the street of late Gothic winged altars .

In the local register of monuments , the church is listed as an architectural monument under registration number 094 98329 .
