The Roman Catholic Church of St. Mary in Biesenthal was built in the years 1908/09 according to a design by Paul Ueberholz in the neo-baroque style. Together with the rectory, it forms a monument ensemble . The house of God is named after the Annunciation .

History and description of the structure

The Catholic Christians in Biesenthal belong to the parish of the Herz-Jesu-Gemeinde in Bernau near Berlin . Its pastor, Carl Ulitzka , took up the parish office in Bernau at the beginning of the 20th century and was looking for other Catholics from the area. In Biesenthal, the Catholic residents held their service in the garden house of a Protestant Christian at 28 Schulstrasse. However, the congregation grew rather quickly, so that a church building was planned to replace this emergency chapel . In 1902 Ulitzka had announced:

"This church should become a St. Mary's Church and bear the name of the Annunciation."

A suitable plot of land was found on Bahnhofstrasse, where after some planning and preparation work began with the laying of the foundation stone on August 16, 1908. After just fourteen months, Archpriest Paul Kirmß from Spandau near Berlin was able to consecrate the church on October 10, 1909 .

The church building was given its location almost in the center of an approximately 3400 square meter property. The rectory is in the northwest corner . Between 1990 and 2009 the parish was able to renovate the church in stages, including the roof of the church and the sacristy as well as balustrades in the entrance area and the stairs of the sacristy. During this time, the entire interior was painted back in the original colors of white and yellow.

The church building is built on an octagonal, roughly cross-shaped floor plan. Due to its protruding protrusions and small niches, it forms a compact circular building. Above the crossing , the full width of the dome rises, with a small inner gallery, the balustrade of which is decorated with putti . The exterior of this dome is completed with a Welschen hood and red roof tiles. In the middle above it is the church tower with an outer diameter of around four meters at the base and the bell in it. The slender tower is clad with zinc sheet. An hour bell was placed in a lower tower attached to the north-west of the sacristy . A non-supporting arch connects the church building with the rectory. The rectory is provided with simple gray plaster, the church building received a decorative plaster in gray and beige.

Furnishing

View into the choir room

A high altar takes up most of the choir room . The altarpiece, a large oil painting depicting the Annunciation, was donated by the Councilor of Commerce von Friedländer-Fuld from Lanke Castle . The altar table in front of it was made by the sculptor Friedrich Schötschel . He also made the lecture cross and the decorative leaf on the main church portal. More baroque saint statues can be seen in the hall church . A sandstone baptismal font stands in a niche to the left of the altar apse. A pulpit completes the equipment. The dome, which is painted with frescoes and extends over the entire width of the church, is remarkable.

organ

Restored organ

On the west gallery is the organ that was first built by Albert Lang around 1869 for the newly built St. Matthias Church in Schöneberg . The Schönebergers gave them to the Marienkirche in Biesenthal in 1925. The organ was restored in 2009 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the church consecration by Harry Sander and Andreas Mähnert's organ building workshop in Eberswalde . The required sum of 28,000 euros was provided by the Ostdeutsche Sparkassen-Vereinigung, Sparkasse Biesenthal and the municipality. Provost Stefan Dybowski , head of the cathedral chapter of the Archdiocese of Berlin , consecrated the organ in November 2009. In addition, melodies by Johann Sebastian Bach , Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Josef Gabriel Rheinberger played .

Use and community life

The well-renovated church building is mainly used for worship in the Catholic parish of Biesenthal. The patronage festival is celebrated on March 25th, the feast of the Annunciation of the Lord . Occasionally there are church concerts and there is a nativity play on Christmas Eve. On the occasion of the centenary of the consecration of the church, a solemn service took place in October 2009, at which Auxiliary Bishop Wolfgang Weider gave a sermon. The jubilee was musically accompanied by the choir of the youth choir of St. Hedwig's Cathedral in Berlin .

The Mariengemeinde maintains a wind choir and a senior group. Community life is supported by a joint, quarterly parish letter from the Herz-Jesu-Kirche Bernau, St. Konrad (Wandlitz) and the Marienkirche.
