St. Marien (Ahlen)
The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Marien is a listed church building on Oststrasse in Ahlen , a town in the Warendorf district , North Rhine-Westphalia . Church and parish belong to the Ahlen deanery in the diocese of Münster .
history
The so-called new church , a Gothic two-aisled hall church from the period from 1283 to 1289, was parceled off from the Bartholomäuskirche and, like this, incorporated into the Kappenberg monastery .
Today's church was built from 1902 to 1904 based on designs by Ludwig Becker and Wilhelm Sunder-Plassmann . It is a sandstone-clad, neo-Gothic relay hall with a choir in the 5/8 end . A sweeping transept , low chapel extensions and a monumental west tower complete the complex. An early Gothic portal from the previous building was reused on the south side; it has been heavily renewed. The garment is deeply staggered, the archivolts are decorated with foliage, the tracery tympanum is framed by cloverleaf arches , it is covered by an eyelash covered with a star pattern. In the central nave and transept there are cross- yoke ribs under flat vaulted domes .
Furnishing
- The octagonal baptismal font from the early 16th century with a rich tracery structure comes (from the previous church), at the foot there are wooden figures from the 17th century.

Bells
Before the First World War, 3 bells hung in the tower of St. Mary's Church, of which in 1917 had to be delivered for war purposes. In 1920 two iron bells were purchased. Today there are eight chime bells hanging in the tower. With the exception of a historic bell from 1689, they were all cast in 1991 and 1999 by the Bell foundry Gebr. Petit & Edelbrock (Gescher). The iron bells were given away to Argentina.
