St. Martin (Burggrumbach)
St. Martin is a Catholic parish church and choir tower church in the Burggrumbach district ofthe Unterpleichfeld community in the Lower Franconian district of Würzburg and isregisteredin the Bavarian Monument Atlas under number D-6-79-201-26. It is located directly in front of Burggrumbach Castle .
history
The beginnings of the Burggrumbach parish, to which the subsidiary parishes Hilpertshausen, Rupprechtshausen and Unterpleichfeld belonged, are not known. However, it is certain that before 1324 there was a parish of Burggrumbach under the patronage of the Counts of Rieneck . The patronage right of the Counts of Rieneck existed until 1353 and then passed to the Würzburg cathedral chapter until 1674 , then until 1803 and again from 1925 to the bishop himself. From 1803 to 1918 it lay with the King of Bavaria . Prince-Bishop Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn had the church built between 1602 and 1608, which was consecrated in 1613 by Auxiliary Bishop Eucharius Sang . The building had a retracted choir in the four-story east tower and a flat-roofed nave with two window axes. The “ Echterturm ” is still a landmark of the village and church. In 1899 the new sacristy was built north of the choir. In 1928, four new bells were purchased for the bells melted down in World War I, three of which were again taken down for war purposes in World War II. On January 16, 1949, three new bells were consecrated. The present church was expanded to the north in 1977 with a modern extension and renovated in 1999, with the sanctuary being redesigned. The extension took place in the form of a raised side aisle with a gable roof, which is subordinate to the old building. The ensemble of castle and church should not be impaired when expanding. The extension to the north resulted from the location of the quarry stone wall around the former cemetery.
