history

The patronal feast of St. Nicholas , a preferred patron saint in the Netherlands is, well, as with the churches in Boellberg and Büschdorf , attributed to the immigrant at this time in the area of Halle Flemish and Frisians. The foundation can therefore be assumed in the second half of the 12th century. Since the church was not destroyed in the Thirty Years War , it is the oldest building in the town.

It was extended for the first time in late Romanesque times and for the second time in 1490, which is indicated by a date in the sacrament house . Like many other churches in the area, it was baroque in the 17th and early 18th centuries, although the exterior was sparse. It received larger segment arched windows and a new roof. The interior of the church was equipped with a pulpit , a new baptismal font and a gallery around 1700 . In 1745 the pulpit was given a new color scheme.

Between 1975 and 1985 the church was gradually rebuilt and renovated. The southern porch was replaced with a new one, the roof was re-covered and the northern gallery removed.

Architecture and equipment

It is a Romanesque quarry stone church in transition to Gothic with a Romanesque west transverse tower with a gable roof and a late Romanesque rectangular single-nave hall. A Romanesque twin arcade has been preserved on the north side of the bell storey . The nave is vaulted by a semicircular wooden barrel.

The carved sacraments niche with a pinnacle on the east wall of the choir and the late Gothic three-winged carved altar , both created around 1490, are remarkable inside the church . In the shrine a crescent moon Madonna is depicted with four saints, four saints in two rows on each wing. In contrast, the panel painting of the Last Supper on the predella dates from 1712.

The octagonal sandstone pulpit and the chalice-shaped polygonal sandstone baptism were both made around 1700; the pulpit has typical baroque decorations such as tendrils, fruits and angel heads. The sculpture of a pelican crowns the sound cover of the pulpit. The brass basin in the baptismal font was donated in 1666 and shows the depiction of the "Scouts of Jericho " on the floor . The three-sided wooden gallery was created by the builder Michael Bellin in 1698 based on an inscription in the west gallery.

The organ , created in 1801 by Johann Gottlieb Mauer from Leipzig and completed in 1804 by Johann Gottfried Krug from Merseburg , was originally located in the Ermlitz village church, which was unused from 1980 to 1990 . The Halberstadt organ building company Reinhard Hüfken restored it in 1985 and moved it to Dölau. It is a single manual Bach organ with 11 stops and a mechanical action .

Several baroque tombs have been preserved in the cemetery surrounding the church .
