St. Nicholas in Rettigheim

The Catholic parish church of St. Nikolaus in Rettigheim , a district of the community of Mühlhausen in the Rhein-Neckar district in Baden-Württemberg , was built in 1823/24. Parts of the church are protected as a monument .

history

As early as the late Middle Ages , there was a chapel in the same place, which was first mentioned in 1594. Rettigheim belonged to the original parish of Malsch for a long time and only became a separate parish in 1870 . When a second sacristy was built in 1930, the foundations of the medieval chapel and the remains of the coffin of the old cemetery, which had been laid out immediately around the chapel from 1730, were found during the cellar expansion.

The parish belongs since 2015, the pastoral unit or parish Letzenberg on to which the Catholic communities of places Malsch , Malsch Mountain , Mulhouse with Tairnbach , Rauenberg , Rettigheim and Rotenberg belong.

architecture

The old chapel was demolished and in 1823/24 the new church was built in the classicism style according to plans by Weinbrenner's student Johann Thierry , district master builder in Heidelberg . The hall church with the front tower was kept very plain and simple. From 1875 the church was expanded with a choir and then renovated inside, with new altars , figures of saints and stations of the Cross being purchased. During the exterior renovation in 1904, the original plastering was removed and since then the historic nave with its yellow sandstone walls has appeared .

In 1956 a new transept with a choir was built, because after 1945 the influx of many expellees had made the church too small.

organ

The first organ from 1824 was replaced by a new instrument in 1897. In 2010 a new organ by the Rettigheim organ builder Karl Göckel (* 1957) was handed over to its intended use.
