Parish Church of St. Peter
Choir

The Catholic parish church of St. Peter in Wielenbach , a municipality in the Upper Bavarian district of Weilheim-Schongau , goes back to a late Romanesque church building from the early 13th century, of which only the substructure of the tower has survived. The Gothic choir dates from the 16th century and still has wall paintings from the construction period. In today's nave from the 1970s, numerous sculptures from the previous church have been preserved. The church is consecrated to the Apostle Peter and is one of the protected architectural monuments in Bavaria.

history

The Wielenbacher church is mentioned for the first time in 1244 in a document in which the Bavarian Duke Otto II transferred the patronage of the parish church to the Wessobrunn monastery .

architecture

In the southern corner of the choir is the oldest preserved part of the church, the square substructure of the tower, which is built from unplastered tuff blocks. 1563 the upper floor was in brick bricked up and built the current five-sided closed choir with its stepped buttresses. In 1723 the dilapidated nave had to be renewed. The nave , built by Joseph Schmuzer in the Baroque style , was consecrated in 1739. Towards the end of the 19th century the church was repainted and received new furnishings in the neo-Romanesque style . With the exception of the west wall, the nave was demolished in 1970/71 and replaced by the architect Theo Wieland with a new building running across the choir. The tower, which originally stood free on the south side of the church, was connected to the choir. The choir windows, which had been reshaped into a round arch in the course of the baroque redesign of the church, regained their pointed arch appearance.

Frescoes

On the north wall of the choir there are frescoes from the 16th century. One scene depicts the crucifixion of Christ with Mary standing under the cross. Other scenes show saints and consecration crosses with the hand of God .

Last Supper Relief

The oldest piece of equipment is a carved relief of a Last Supper from around 1500.
