The Church of St. Philippus and Jakobus is a Roman Catholic parish church in Eft-Hellendorf , a district of the Perl community , Merzig-Wadern district , Saarland . The church bears the patronage of the apostles Philip and James and is listed as an individual monument in the Saarland's list of monuments .

history

In the years 1127 and 1130, the Mettlach Abbey register of goods recorded two donations to St. Lutwinus in Evetha (Eft) and today's Hellendorf branch . On the one hand, knight Udelin von Hellendorf, who had entered the Mettlach monastery, bequeathed his allodium to the church in Eft; on the other hand, the matron Friderun von Hellendorf donated an estate in Eft and thus received a burial and an aniversarium in the abbey. The Archbishop Meginer von Trier (1127-1130) confirmed these donations.

According to a visitation in 1569, Eyfft (Eft) was a branch of Perla (Perl).

In the 16th century the church in Eft was changed by the construction of a choir and a tower . In the years 1724 to 1725 a new nave was built and new choir windows were installed. On May 5, 1725, the enlarged church was consecrated by Johann Matthias von Eyss.

In 1803 the parish of Perl, to which Eft belonged as a branch, was dissolved as part of a reorganization. Eft and Hellendorf were assigned to the parish of Tünsdorf . In 1817 the membership of the diocese also changed. Eft-Hellendorf, which was now under Prussian administration, was no longer subordinate to the diocese of Metz , but to the diocese of Trier . In 1829 Efts was raised to an independent parish .

In the middle of the 19th century renovations were carried out again, during which a neo-Gothic portal was installed, which today serves as a glare portal on the north side of the church. In 1893 a sacristy was added between the 16th century tower and choir . An extension of the nave by an axis , as well as a romanizing conversion took place in 1908 according to plans by the architect André Streng ( Cologne ). As part of the renovation work, the straight ceiling in the interior of the church was replaced by a cross vault made of quarry stone , and the previously three-story tower was raised by a fourth floor with three-part acoustic windows.

During the Second World War , the church suffered severe damage in 1944, which was removed in 1947 as part of a major renovation .

In 2008 the church was subjected to a restoration under the direction of the diocese architect Marcell Hürtgen (Trier).

Furnishing

The church is furnished with two baroque altars and wooden sculptures . Most of the other furnishings were designed by the architect André Streng in 1908.
