The Church of St. Remigius is a Catholic church dedicated to St. Remigius in Leidingen , a district of the Wallerfangen municipality , in the Saarlouis district in the Saarland . In the list of monuments of the Saarland, the church is a single monument listed.

history

The previous church of today's church had become too small in the 16th century. The interior was probably only four by eight meters. For this reason, an enlargement was made in 1530, during which a new church tower was built, which is still standing today. In addition, during the construction work, the east orientation of the church, with the tower in the west, was changed to one facing south, with the tower now attached to the side of the nave .

In 1742 the entire nave was renewed and the tower was given its current dome .

Until 1936, the church of St. Remigius was also used by the residents of the French district of Leiding (the state border between Germany and France runs through Leidingen ). In the French part, a church dedicated to Saint Joan of Arc ( Joan of Arc ) was consecrated in 1939 .

In the years between 1945 and 1955 the church underwent a restoration .

Architecture and equipment

View inside the church

The church of St. Remigius in Leidingen is a baroque hall church . The building is divided into a three-axis nave , which merges into a three-sided, polygonal choir , to which in turn a sacristy is attached, as well as the tower placed on the west of the nave.

What is striking about the church tower is its hood. It is an onion cap with a double-decker lantern , which is similar to the bonnets at Saarbrücker Stengel churches.

The outside facade of the church is simply designed. The gable north facade, in which the entrance portal is also located, has a round window in the gable triangle within the sloping roof in the middle. A row of three arched windows runs directly above the portal. The windows in the nave and in the choir are also arched windows. The portal of the church consists of a two-door entrance gate. The doors are hung in a round arch portal .

The church's furnishings include colored tiles from Villeroy & Boch on the walls of the choir and on the floor. The interior has a flat ceiling, the walls are painted white.

Behind the church there is a Lourdes grotto .
