Leidingen is a district of the municipality Wallerfangen with approx. 190 inhabitants in the district of Saarlouis ( Saarland ). Until the end of 1973, Leidingen was an independent municipality.

geography

Leidingen is located on the heights of the Saargau directly on the German-French border.

Located in France and originally forming a municipality with Leidingen, Leiding has 28 inhabitants and belongs to the municipality of Heining-lès-Bouzonville in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ).

The border between France and Germany runs along the middle of the "Neutral Road", which in France is called "Rue de la Frontière" (border road) and runs through the town. The houses are in Germany on one side of the street and in France on the other.

history

Leidingen was first mentioned in a document in 893. The border running through the town was established in the Border Convention between Prussia and France of October 23, 1829. In 1830 it was marked with boundary stones, as documented by a boundary stone that has been preserved to this day.

As part of the regional and administrative reform in Saarland , the previously independent municipality of Leidingen was assigned to the municipality of Wallerfangen on January 1, 1974 . Since then, Leidingen has been a district and, together with the neighboring town of Ihn, forms a municipality.

Only since the 2010s have there been increased efforts by the local administrations of Leiding and Leidingen to work together across borders in drinking and wastewater supply and road construction. For this, among other things, EU funds had to be applied for and bureaucratic hurdles had to be overcome.

Parish Church of St. Remigius

Buildings

The Catholic parish church of St. Remigius was built in 1742 as a simple and pleasing hall building. The tower in the lower part is older; it dates from 1530 and was originally a west tower . The hood and lantern with lively contours date from 1742.

The church was also used by the French parishioners until 1936. Due to the stricter border controls of the National Socialists, the French built their own church.

Immediately on the border is an old farm that originally belonged to the Benedictine monastery of Bouzonville (Busendroff). It is a three-sided farm . On the open side facing the street, a gate in the quarry stone wall allows access to the inner courtyard. The current expansion of the manor house of the monastery estate dates from 1752.

Cultural appreciations

Leidingen was recognized literarily by Alfred Gulden in his novel The Leidinger Wedding from 1984. In addition, Alfred Gulden shot an award-winning documentary about this village in the early 1980s, "Grenzfall Leidingen". As part of the documentation 16 × Germany , a film about Leidingen was shown for the Saarland. It was first broadcast on October 4, 2013 on Das Erste . Directed by Sarah Moll .
