The parish church of St. Servatius is a Catholic church in the district of Winterscheid in the municipality of Ruppichteroth in the Rhein-Sieg district . The original patron saint of the church was St. Sebastian , who was gradually ousted by Servatius in the 18th century.

Building history

The Romanesque tower of the parish church of St. Servatius rises visible from afar at the highest point of the place. The existence of this church is proven by a papal document from 1131 at the latest, the existing tower is ascribed to the 12th century.

Probably around the beginning of the 16th century, the originally single-nave Romanesque nave, measuring approx. 18 × 5 m, was supplemented by two 2.50 m wide, but significantly lower side aisles , which were separated from the main nave by a row of columns. As a result of the Thirty Years' War , the church is likely to have deteriorated to such an extent that extensive security and new construction works were necessary from 1676 to 1685.

From 1765 the church was redesigned again, beginning with the demolition of the eastern part of the nave and its extension by 13 m. At the instigation and with own means of the pastor Johann Bertram Glasmacher († June 5, 1768) a family crypt with seven burial niches was created in the area of the choir , in which he himself, his mother and the early knife Johannes Peter Sturm, who died in 1789, had their last Found resting place. The nave in its current form was completed in 1781. Finally, the western parts of the church around the tower were rebuilt on the old foundations, which was completed in 1785.

During this construction phase, the old, partially collapsed churchyard wall was repaired and in 1772 seven stone " footfalls of Jesus " were added, three of which are still preserved on the north-west side of the church.

In 1832 the church received a gallery and a - used - organ , which was expanded in 1864.

The Cologne painter Johannes Greferath painted the interior in 1929, and in the mid-1970s a new sacristy was built at the northeast corner of the church building.

In 1973, some of the historical grave crosses from the 17th and 18th centuries that were still in place were put back on the site surrounding the church. There is also a small Lourdes grotto here .

In 1981 the building was completely restored.

The church with the surrounding cemetery and the enclosure has been a listed building since 1985 and is entered in the list of monuments of the municipality of Ruppichteroth under serial number 20.

Peal

The ringing of the church consists of three bells , the smallest and oldest of which, called "Marienglocke", dates back to 1677 and is still consecrated to St. Sebastian. It was cast by Gottfried Hellwig from Wipperfürth . It measures 100 cm in diameter and weighs 658 kg. The medium-sized bell, called "St. Sebastianusglocke", was re-cast in 1880 by Christian Claren in Sieglar from a predecessor, also from 1677 . It measures 116 cm in diameter and weighs 930 kg. In 1880 Claren also created the third bell, the "St. Servatius bell" (130 cm, 1340 kg). The occasion was the 50th anniversary of the priesthood of the dean and pastor Heinrich Joseph Oberdörffer. In 1942 the three bells were removed, but many church bells escaped the fate of being melted down for armament purposes. After the war they returned to their old place, they are now a listed building.

The chimes of the bells are "g", "f" and "es". A bell expert attested that the chime in Winterscheid in 1979 had a certain unconventionality, it had “a very personal touch”, but the pater noster motif was clearly audible.

Furnishing

The interior of the church in plait style can be described as simply rural. Nevertheless, it contains some remarkable pieces of equipment:

  • In the area of the western exit there is a baptismal font attributed to the 12th or 13th century as evidence of the Romanesque origin of the church.
  • The baroque high altar was commissioned by Pastor Glasmacher from Master Bollinger in Siegburg in 1766 , as were the figures of the Mother of God and Saint Joseph with their radiant wreaths standing at the passages to the sacristy . Older side altars are located at the eastern ends of the side aisles, namely a Marian altar in the north and one dedicated to St. Joseph in the south.
  • The Saint Michael on the hood of the pulpit , whose creator is unknown, dates from 1805 and was made by the carpenter and sculptor Peter Richarz from Winterscheiderbröl, who is also the Wendelinus chapel donated.
  • The baroque Maria-Hilf altar from 1882 in the tower passage is a gift from the patron saint Felix Graf Droste zu Vischering von Nesselrode-Reichenstein.

The colored interior design from 1929 is no longer available today.

Domination

The aforementioned document from 1131 confirmed that the Bonn monastery of St. Cassius and Florentius had part ownership of the church in Winterscheid. The owner of the other part is unknown.

Since the middle of the 14th century at the latest, the burgraves of Drachenfels and the lords of Stein exercised the patronage and collation of the Winterscheider church. From 1530 , the Lords of Myllendonk followed and - since the second half of the 16th century alone - the Lords of Nesselrode . It was not until 1980 that Count von Nesselrode finally gave up the right of patronage and collation.
