Staitz was a municipality in the district of Greiz in Thuringia . On 1 December 2011 it was part of the rural community city Auma-Weidatal .

The name "Staitz" probably comes from Sorbian and is probably based on the word "Stav" (= pond). The place was first mentioned in a document on July 22, 1283, when Heinrich the Elder, Vogt von Weida , confirmed to the Cronschwitz monastery that Heinrich von Lohma had bought interest in Staitz. Wolfgang Kahl also confirms this first documentary mention of the village of Staitz. In old documents Staitz was also referred to as a "village with many carters".

geography

Staitz is located in the Thuringian Slate Mountains not far from the Weidatalsperre . The 12th degree of longitude runs along the eastern edge of the built-up area. Staitz is located on a slight slope.

history

There were three mills in Staitz:

  • The Franzenmühle . The first miller was mentioned in 1609
  • The Bermichsmühle near Staitz. The first miller was mentioned in 1533
  • The Staitz ore mill . The first miller was mentioned in 1556

The first church was probably built in 1521. The “curtain arched window” with the inscription “Anno Domin - m§v and XXI” is still preserved on the south side of the tower. In 1812 part of the village, including the church and school, burned down, and three church bells were also destroyed. As early as 1813, a new church bell was made by the Ulrich zu Laucha and Apolda brothers from the metal that was partly collected again. It still bears the inscription: "God bless and receive Staitz". The newly built church was consecrated in 1816.

On April 10, 1852, the place received a new seal. The coat of arms shows the "three linden trees" that were planted by decision of the municipal council. In 1975 three linden trees were planted again in the parking lot (formerly the barn pond) as a replacement. Not far from the village is the Weidatalsperre (built 1951 to 1956).

The center of the village is in the center of the village on the village square. It used to be a school, then a kindergarten and is now partially inhabited.

Before the construction of the dam, excavations were carried out to secure and document the castle complex, the so-called Fliehburg , which is recognized as a ground monument. Staitz was a member of the Weidatal administrative community until January 3, 1996 , after which the community belonged to the Auma-Weidatal administrative community . On December 1, 2011, the city of Auma and the communities of Braunsdorf , Göhren-Döhlen , Staitz and Wiebelsdorf merged to form the rural community of Auma-Weidatal.
