Location of the municipality | |
Stalden ( Valais German Schtaalu ) is a political municipality and civic community in the Visp district and a parish of the Visp deanery in the German-speaking part of the canton of Valais in Switzerland . Due to the large number of bridges in a comparatively small area, it is also called "Das Brückendorf".
geography
The Saas Valley and the Mattertal meet at Stalden . Numerous bridges from different eras are evidence of the brisk traffic that was already prevalent in this region and are evidence that Stalden was an important hub for the transport of goods from an early age. The oldest bridge is the Chibrücke from 1544, which was built by the builder Ulrich Ruffiner . Today the valley road in the direction of Saas-Fee and Zermatt crosses the Vispa over the St. Michaels Bridge and the Illas Bridge.
Historical
Stalden was first mentioned in a document in 1213. The former hamlet or village was called Merjen / Merju. It can be assumed that the village of Stalden was already known as an important transit point at that time.
