history

St. Peter and Paul rotunda of the early medieval castle

The first documentary mention comes from Thietmar von Merseburg from the year 976 ( proelium ad Pilisin ), based on which Boleslav II defeated a Bavarian army under the castle. The settlement with the Pilsen Castle, the most important early medieval economic and administrative center of the Přemyslids in western Bohemia, was built in the 10th century at the junction of the trunk road from Prague to Regensburg over the Úslava . In the 13th century, an unsuccessful attempt to re-establish a town in the High Middle Ages is archaeologically documented. A few years later, around 1295, the city of New Pilsen was laid out about 10 kilometers downstream of the Úslava. The settlement was then called Old Pilsen (1333: Antiqua Pilzna , 1442: w Starem Plzenczy ). In 1266 the settlement had eight churches that were placed under the patronage of the Chotěšov monastery .

With the founding of the city of Pilsen, Altpilsen lost its importance. In 1361 Charles IV had the Radyně Castle built. Until the 15th century, the city was under the Bohemian crown and was then given to various noble families. In the 18th century there was not much left of the former importance and the old privileges of Plzenec and the place sank into the village. It was not until 1845 that Starý Plzenec was declared a market town again and in 1902 a town.

A brewery was established in 1871, which was converted into the Bohemia sparkling wine cellar in 1964. The town belonged to the Okres Plzeň-jih until December 31, 2006 .
