Starkville is a town in Oktibbeha County in the US state of Mississippi and the administrative headquarters ( the county seat ) of Oktibbeha County. Starkville is located about 200 kilometers northeast of the capital Jackson .
Starkville is part of the Golden Triangle ( Golden Triangle ) composed of Columbus , West Point is and Starkville.
The area of today's Starkville was settled by Indians over 2000 years ago, before white settlers settled on the area many centuries later and founded the town of Boardtown , which they named after a mill to the southwest on the Big Black River . 1835 Board Town was finally elevated to the county seat of Oktibbeha County and in honor of John Stark , a general in the American Revolutionary War , in Starkville renamed.
At the 2010 census , Starkville had 23,888 residents. In 2014 there were already 24,886 inhabitants, 59% of whom were white and around 35% black. Overall, Starkville experienced a population growth of 13.8% between 2000 and 2014. This made Starkville the largest city in Oktibbeha County in terms of population (2010) and the fifteenth largest in Mississippi. 96% of the population live in urban areas. According to the United States Census Bureau , the city of Starkville covers an area of approximately 66.9 km², of which about 66.5 km² is land and 0.4 km² (0.6%) is water.
The Mississippi State University , with over 16,000 students one of the most important universities in Mississippi, is located in Starkville. Furthermore, the Starkville High School and two private schools, Starkville Academy and Starkville Christian School are located in Starkville .
