Steffen Reiche

Steffen Reiche (born June 27, 1960 in Potsdam ) is a Protestant clergyman and was a German politician ( SPD ). From 1994 to 1999 he was Minister for Science, Research and Culture and from 1999 to 2004 Minister for Education, Youth and Sport of the State of Brandenburg. From 2005 to 2009 he was a member of the German Bundestag .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1979, Steffen Reiche began studying Protestant theology at the Sprachenkonvikt Berlin , which he interrupted in 1982/1983 to do an apprenticeship as a carpenter . In 1986 he completed his theology studies and was pastor in Christinendorf from 1988 to 1990 .

After leaving the Bundestag, Reiche worked again as a pastor in the Protestant Epiphany community in Berlin-Charlottenburg and as an interim pastor in the Berlin-Nikolassee community . Since November 25, 2013 he has been a regular pastor at the Nikolasse Church . Since March 2020 he has been responsible for the format “Words for the Day” and “Word for Sunday” at the private broadcaster Hauptstadt.TV . The topic of the almost five-minute impulses determines the respective daily motto , which is read out at the beginning of each broadcast. He is also deputy chairman of the German-Israeli Society (DIG) Berlin and Potsdam, organizer of the so-called “focus talks”, a series of lectures and discussions on Christian-Muslim dialogue and a member of the association “Faith, courage and freedom - Christians in the GDR and after ”, which records interviews with Christians who were in opposition to the socialist regime. In 2014 the Evangelical news agency idea named him “Politician of the Year”.

Steffen Reiche is married and has three daughters.

Political party

Reiche was one of the founders of the Social Democratic Party of the GDR (SDP) on October 7, 1989 and immediately became a member of the board.

After the merger of the SDP with the SPD, he was state chairman of the SPD Brandenburg until July 2000 .

From March 1990 until the accession of the five new federal states to the Federal Republic of Germany on October 3, 1990, he was a member of the first freely elected People's Chamber of the GDR.

From October 1990 until the resignation of his mandate on October 20, 2005 Reiche belonged to the state parliament of Brandenburg . His last position was in 2004 as a candidate for the direct mandate in the constituency of Teltow-Fläming II and drawn in via his party's state list.

From 2005 to 2009 Reiche was a member of the 16th German Bundestag and was a member of the executive committee of the SPD parliamentary group. He was also chairman of the German- Caucasian parliamentary group and member of the parliamentary advisory board of the Foundation for the Sorbian People . Steffen Reiche moved into the Bundestag with 37.6% of the first votes as a directly elected member of the constituency Cottbus - Spree-Neisse . In the 2009 Bundestag election , he lost his direct mandate to Wolfgang Nešković , the candidate of the left , who received 2.1% more first votes. Since Reiche was not covered by the state list, he left the Bundestag.

Public offices

After the state elections in 1994 , Reiche was appointed Minister for Science, Research and Culture to the state government of Brandenburg led by Prime Minister Manfred Stolpe on October 11, 1994 ( Stolpe II cabinet ). After the state elections in 1999 he took over the management of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport ( Cabinet Stolpe III ) on September 29, 1999 . In this office he also belonged to the government headed by Matthias Platzeck from June 2002 . After the 2004 state elections , he left the cabinet on September 19, 2004.

Reiche was President of the Brandenburg Athletics Association from 2006 to 2018. He was appointed honorary president of the association in 2018.
