The mountain , located in the sub-group Northwest Walsertal Mountains , rises from the ridge that runs from the Diedamskopf (2090 m) to the southeast to the Grünhorn (2039 m). The direct mountain neighbor to the west is the Kreuzmandl (1982 m). To the southeast the ridge runs over a notch to the Grünhorn. In the north, the Gerachsattel (1752 m) separates the Steinmandl from the Hählekopf (2058 m). In the northwest there is a small plateau where the source streams of the Subersach meet . To the south, the flanks drop as a large hollow into the valley of the Schrecksbach , above which the Üntschenspitze (2135 m) rises . To the east, the Steinmandl and the Hählekopf form the western end of the Schwarzwassertal .
The district on which the Steinmandl is located is Mittelberg . The border to the northern municipal area of Bezau and the southern Schoppernau area also runs over the mountain .
Ascent
The base for climbing the Kreuzmandl is the Schwarzwasserhütte (1620 m) at the foot of the eastern ridge.
summer
The normal route to the Steinmandl runs from the Schwarzwasserhütte over the eastern ridge to the summit. It is also possible to climb the rocky ridges from the Grünhorn and Kreuzmandl. The prerequisites for this are surefootedness , a head for heights and climbing skills of the 1st degree .
winter
Even in winter, the Steinmandl can be climbed as part of a ski tour . The ascent from the Schwarzwasserhütte is the same as the Sommerweg, but usually descends via the eastern flank. In addition, the summit can be reached via the southern hollow from the Neuhornbachhaus (1650 m).
Summit cross
The old summit cross on the Steinmandl was destroyed by a lightning strike in 2010. As a result, the industrial school for wood technology in Stuttgart decided to build a new cross. After a trial assembly in June 2011, the new wooden cross was finally erected in September 2011. The project was accompanied by a film team from SWR television .
